Saturday's college roundup (track, rowing, tennis): Local Hokies among NCAA track qualifiers

Virginia Tech teammates Ronnie Black (high jump) from Menchville High and Will Mulherin (5,000 meters) from Tabb were among the numerous athletes from many area universities who qualified for the NCAA track and field championships, thanks to their performances at the East preliminaries in Jacksonville, Fla.

Women?s rowing:

Virginia rowing team advanced all three boats from semifinals to Sunday?s grand finals on the second day of the NCAA championships on Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J.

Men?s tennis:

National runner-up Virginia?s two remaining singles entries lost in the NCAA quarterfinals in Athens, Ga.


No. 2 seed Mitchell Frank fell to Ohio State?s Blaz Rola 7-6 (7-5), 6-1. Alex Domijan lost 6-0, 5-7, 6-1 to top-seeded defending champion Steve Johnson, who has led Southern California to four straight team crowns ? beating U.Va. along the way each time, including in title matches the last two years.

In a doubles quarterfinal, VCU?s Alexis Heugas and Antoine Baroz lost 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 to Ole Miss brothers Chris and Marcel Thiemann.
