Snowbirds: Prepare for Hurricane Isaac | Travel Insurance File

tropical stormIf you are bound for Florida or the Gulf States this coming weekend (August 25 through 27), or if you?re a snowbird who has property in this area, you need to keep your attention focused on tropical storm/hurricane Isaac, now building steam in the Caribbean.

Though forecasting storms is a risky business, the most reliable computer models predict the storm will move through the Caribbean, possibly hitting Jamaica with hurricane force 1 or 2 category winds and then turn north directly over Miami or just to the west, into the Gulf.? In any case, it will cause damage far into Florida and beyond.

If you have property anywhere in Florida that is unattended, call a neighbour who lives there and ask them to check things out for you, batten down anything that may be subject to wind damage, and make sure you secure an open communication channel with them so you might check with them during and after the storm passes.

It is predicted to be a category 2 storm so that could bring winds in excess of 100 mph.

If you have plans to travel to Florida or the eastern shore of the Gulf coast, keep checking with the weather service and if you have trip cancellation insurance, read your policy carefully?particularly the section on exclusions and limitations, or check with your travel insurer.? You can?t just cancel outright if you only suspect a storm may hit your destination and expect to save your deposit or any other prepaid fees you have already put out. If you do cancel and the storm spares your destination, you will likely not get your money back.

Also, some insurers will only reimburse your losses if a significant portion of your vacation trip is lost, such as more than 30 percent.

Also, if the airlines feel it?s safe to keep flying into the area, your losses from cancellation may not be reimbursable.

Most important keep checking with your government travel service (DFAIT in Canada, the State Department in the U.S). You can find them by clicking Travel Links at the top of our home page. If they issue a warning not to travel into the area, you better not: you?re insurer won?t reimburse your losses if you do.

If you have any doubts, call your travel insurance company.

All travel insurers advertising on this site meet TravelinsuranceFile?s acceptability criteria for out-of-country health benefits for Canadian residents. All offer savings trip cancellation/disruption plans to protect you from hurricanes and other natural disasters. You can also buy online, but do so when buying or putting a deposit down on your trip.

Remembering Karlie | Fatherhood Etc.

Karlie Geiser Hobson

Karlie Geiser Hobson (Photo: EHSC)

Karlie Geiser was one of Anna?s speech therapists. They worked together once a week for almost two years. She was also the Director of Speech at Eugene Hearing & Speech Center and a big part of the lives of so many kids struggling with speech along with their families, as well as her own family, of course, and her co-workers at EHSC.

We hadn?t seen Karlie in over a year, and it came as a huge shock when we found out that she died last Saturday in a car accident near Mapleton. How can you make any sense of losing someone so young and so unexpectedly? There are no words that can express the shock, the pain, and the gaping hole torn through so many hearts.

But what I can do is share a story. Karlie was a big part of Anna?s life and she appears toward the end of A Smile for Anna, as Anna goes through her first year of speech therapy. She made great progress that first year with two therapists. The one assigned to her by EC Cares met Anna every week at a Sunday School classroom in a local church. The classroom had a slide in it, which three-year-old Anna loved. Karlie met with Anna in her office at EHSC, and without the slide it was a lot harder to get Anna to focus on her speech work.

It was a struggle at first, but Karlie never gave up, and one day?that I will never forget? she brought in something that made all the difference.

?So Anna. Are you getting a little bored playing games at the table??

?Ya.?

?Well, I don?t have a slide, but I?ve got a new fun game we can play.?

I watched from the observation room as Karlie brought out a large, wooden clown with three holes cut out?mouth, chest, and belly. I?d seen similar ones at fairs.

?Do you want to throw a bean bag through the hole??

?Yes peees.?

?Well if you do five word cards,? Karlie held up five fingers. ?I?ll give you three tosses.? She dropped her ring finger and pinky leaving up three.

?Oh Dae.?

?We?re working on Gs today so we?ll need a stick.? Karlie held out two tongue depressors wrapped in white paper. ?Cherry or Strawberry??

?Dawbewy!?

I remembered how Anna hated strawberries when she was five months old: now they were her favorite fruit.

?OK.? Karlie said. ?Open up.?

Karlie put the stick in Anna?s mouth as she said the words: Girl, Good, Go, Gull, and Gone.

?Derl . . . Duhd . . .Do . . . Dull . . . Don.? Even with the tongue depressor she wasn?t getting it yet, but at least she was trying.

?Good job, Anna. Now take a turn.?

Anna walked over and put a bag in the clown?s mouth.

?No, turkey, you?ve got to throw it.?

Anna laughed and took three steps back. She side-armed the second bag into the clown?s mouth.?She jumped up and down and clapped. ?Yay!?

?Good job, Anna. High five.?

She smiled and gave Karlie?s hand a loud smack.

Whether it was the clown, or a princess game with a pretty tiara, or Anna?s choice of books to bring in the office with her, Karlie found a way to reach Anna every time she got frustrated. She made great strides, especially in her first year of therapy, and after two-and-a-half years, she was ready to enter Kindergarten and speak clearly enough to be understood most of the time by her new teachers and classmates.

Karlie made a huge difference in Anna?s life. She helped Anna find her voice and we will always be grateful for that. We will never forget her.

Ofcom approves Everything Everywhere's early 4G plans, starting next month

While Brits still languish at the back of the queue for LTE, there is at least a sliver of hope that regulator Ofcom is moving forward with plans for 4G provision. It's announced today that carrier Everything Everywhere (the combined network of Orange and T-Mobile) will be allowed to use its 1800 MHz spectrum to push out next-generation phone services. Ofcom decided that the change to the UK network's license would deliver "significant benefits to consumers, and that there is no material risk that those benefits will be outweighed by a distortion of competition." Auctions for additional 800 and 2.6 GHz bands are still on track to happen later this year, aiming for a roll-out through 2013. Everything Everywhere will be allowed to use LTE and (bizarrely) WiMAX starting 11 September 2012, although this may not be the launch date for any commercial service -- which could be unfortunate. The UK's comms regulator goes into the specifics after the break.

(AP) ? Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan are ready to face New Hampshire voters and answer their questions, especially about the Republican plan for Medicare that has left some seniors skittish.

Romney and Ryan on Monday will try to explain to voters ? particularly seniors, who reliably cast ballots ? that their proposal to offer a private alternative to Medicare would not affect anyone over age 55. Some 14 percent of New Hampshire residents are over the age of 65, and this state, which holds the nation's first presidential primary, is known for its voters' sharp questioning of candidates during such town hall-style events.

President Barack Obama spent Saturday in New Hampshire, casting doubts on what the GOP ticket would do for older voters.

"You would think they would avoid talking about Medicare, given the fact that both of them have proposed to voucherize the Medicare system," he said Saturday in Windham. "But I guess they figure the best defense is to try to go on offense.

"So, New Hampshire, here is what you need to know: Since I have been in office, I have strengthened Medicare."

Obama's top aides spent Sunday repeating the claim in television interviews that the GOP would gut Medicare, while Romney's aides spent their day trying to convince voters of the opposite.

"None of the changes would affect current beneficiaries. There is only one candidate in the race who has made cuts to Medicare that have affected current seniors, and that is President Obama," Romney senior adviser Eric Fehrnstrom told CNN.

"In order to pay for Obamacare, he raided the Medicare piggy bank, took $700 billion out of the Medicare program and shifted it to Obamacare," he added. "That's wrong."

But Ryan's own proposal in Congress is also worrisome for seniors. His Medicare plan would encourage future retirees to consider private coverage that the government would help pay for through a voucher-like system, while keeping the traditional program as an option. A main concern that has been raised about that approach is that the government payment for health insurance won't keep pace with health care inflation, shifting an ever-growing share of costs to people on fixed incomes.

A deficit hawk and the House Republicans' chief budget writer, Ryan has stood out in Washington for laying out tough spending choices that many lawmakers in both parties avoid.

So it was almost inevitable that his selection as Romney's running mate would vault Medicare to the top of the campaign debate, even though any talk about changing the popular but costly program is typically avoided by presidential candidates.

The debate's dominant topic remains how to tame Medicare's explosive growth without hurting the millions of elderly Americans ? and future retirees ? who count on it to pay for health care.

In the latest issue of Newsweek, columnist Niall Ferguson called Ryan "one of only a handful of politicians in Washington who is truly sincere about addressing this country's fiscal crisis." Ferguson, who advised Republican John McCain during the 2008 presidential campaign, wrote the magazine's new cover story, headlined "Hit the Road, Barack."

Romney, who spent the weekend north of Manchester at his vacation home in Wolfeboro, had no public events Sunday. Ryan was home in Janesville, Wis., and planned to join Romney for their first joint appearance in this state. New Hampshire's four electoral votes are being closely contested.

Cloud brightening to control global warming? Geoengineers propose an experiment

ScienceDaily (Aug. 20, 2012) ? Even though it sounds like science fiction, researchers are taking a second look at a controversial idea that uses futuristic ships to shoot salt water high into the sky over the oceans, creating clouds that reflect sunlight and thus counter global warming.

University of Washington atmospheric physicist Rob Wood describes a possible way to run an experiment to test the concept on a small scale in a comprehensive paper published this month in the journal Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society.

The point of the paper -- which includes updates on the latest study into what kind of ship would be best to spray the salt water into the sky, how large the water droplets should be and the potential climatological impacts -- is to encourage more scientists to consider the idea of marine cloud brightening and even poke holes in it. In the paper, he and a colleague detail an experiment to test the concept.

"What we're trying to do is make the case that this is a beneficial experiment to do," Wood said. With enough interest in cloud brightening from the scientific community, funding for an experiment may become possible, he said.

The theory behind so-called marine cloud brightening is that adding particles, in this case sea salt, to the sky over the ocean would form large, long-lived clouds. Clouds appear when water forms around particles. Since there is a limited amount of water in the air, adding more particles creates more, but smaller, droplets.

"It turns out that a greater number of smaller drops has a greater surface area, so it means the clouds reflect a greater amount of light back into space," Wood said. That creates a cooling effect on Earth.

Marine cloud brightening is part of a broader concept known as geoengineering which encompasses efforts to use technology to manipulate the environment. Brightening, like other geoengineering proposals, is controversial for its ethical and political ramifications and the uncertainty around its impact. But those aren't reasons not to study it, Wood said.

"I would rather that responsible scientists test the idea than groups that might have a vested interest in proving its success," he said. The danger with private organizations experimenting with geoengineering is that "there is an assumption that it's got to work," he said.

Wood and his colleagues propose trying a small-scale experiment to test feasibility and begin to study effects. The test should start by deploying sprayers on a ship or barge to ensure that they can inject enough particles of the targeted size to the appropriate elevation, Wood and a colleague wrote in the report. An airplane equipped with sensors would study the physical and chemical characteristics of the particles and how they disperse.

The next step would be to use additional airplanes to study how the cloud develops and how long it remains. The final phase of the experiment would send out five to 10 ships spread out across a 100 kilometer, or 62 mile, stretch. The resulting clouds would be large enough so that scientists could use satellites to examine them and their ability to reflect light.

Wood said there is very little chance of long-term effects from such an experiment. Based on studies of pollutants, which emit particles that cause a similar reaction in clouds, scientists know that the impact of adding particles to clouds lasts only a few days.

Still, such an experiment would be unusual in the world of climate science, where scientists observe rather than actually try to change the atmosphere.

Wood notes that running the experiment would advance knowledge around how particles like pollutants impact the climate, although the main reason to do it would be to test the geoengineering idea.

A phenomenon that inspired marine cloud brightening is ship trails: clouds that form behind the paths of ships crossing the ocean, similar to the trails that airplanes leave across the sky. Ship trails form around particles released from burning fuel.

But in some cases ship trails make clouds darker. "We don't really know why that is," Wood said.

Despite increasing interest from scientists like Wood, there is still strong resistance to cloud brightening.

"It's a quick-fix idea when really what we need to do is move toward a low-carbon emission economy, which is turning out to be a long process," Wood said. "I think we ought to know about the possibilities, just in case."

The authors of the paper are treading cautiously.

"We stress that there would be no justification for deployment of [marine cloud brightening] unless it was clearly established that no significant adverse consequences would result. There would also need to be an international agreement firmly in favor of such action," they wrote in the paper's summary.

There are 25 authors on the paper, including scientists from University of Leeds, University of Edinburgh and the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. The lead author is John Latham of the National Center for Atmospheric Research and the University of Manchester, who pioneered the idea of marine cloud brightening.

Wood's research was supported by the UW College of the Environment Institute.

Twins Talk: Blackburn is the worst starter in baseball

The Blackburn riot of 2012 has started! More here.

I take no joy in saying this, but Blackburn is the worst starting pitcher in baseball. He entered Friday with a 7.33 ERA. In 93.1 innings, he?d allowed 132 hits and struck out only 41. The league is batting .334 against him.

Normally a guy who gives up more than seven runs every nine innings isn?t given more than five or six chances to start, but Blackie was making his 19th start Friday, and his struggles are a continuation from last year.

Obviously the Twins keep sending Blackburn out there because they?re paying him a lot of money (they signed him to a multi-year contract following the 2009 season after he?d allowed a league-high 240 hits while striking out only 98 batters in 206 innings).

But it?s time to end this. Blackburn will never be a useful starting pitcher again. If the Twins don?t want to cut him and eat his contract, then stick him in the back of the bullpen and hope he might be a halfway decent mop-up man.

And don?t ever again give a multi-year contract to one of the most hittable pitchers in the game.

Evolutionary increase in size of the human brain explained

Friday, August 17, 2012

Researchers have found what they believe is the key to understanding why the human brain is larger and more complex than that of other animals.

The human brain, with its unequaled cognitive capacity, evolved rapidly and dramatically.

"We wanted to know why," says James Sikela, PhD, who headed the international research team that included researchers from the University of Colorado School of Medicine, Baylor College of Medicine and the National Institutes of Mental Health. "The size and cognitive capacity of the human brain sets us apart. But how did that happen?"

"This research indicates that what drove the evolutionary expansion of the human brain may well be a specific unit within a protein ? called a protein domain -- that is far more numerous in humans than other species."

The protein domain at issue is DUF1220. Humans have more than 270 copies of DUF1220 encoded in the genome, far more than other species. The closer a species is to humans, the more copies of DUF1220 show up. Chimpanzees have the next highest number, 125. Gorillas have 99, marmosets 30 and mice just one. "The one over-riding theme that we saw repeatedly was that the more copies of DUF1220 in the genome, the bigger the brain. And this held true whether we looked at different species or within the human population."

Sikela, a professor at the CU medical school, and his team also linked DUF1220 to brain disorders. They associated lower numbers of DUF1220 with microcephaly, when the brain is too small; larger numbers of the protein domain were associated with macrocephaly, when the brain is too large.

The findings were reported today in the online edition of The American Journal of Human Genetics. The researchers drew their conclusions by comparing genome sequences from humans and other animals as well as by looking at the DNA of individuals with microcephaly and macrocephaly and of people from a non-disease population.

"The take home message was that brain size may be to a large degree a matter of protein domain dosage," Sikela says. "This discovery opens many new doors. It provides new tools to diagnose diseases related to brain size. And more broadly, it points to a new way to study the human brain and its dramatic increase in size and ability over what, in evolutionary terms, is a short amount of time."

(AP) ? Former LSU star Tyrann Mathieu has entered a drug rehabilitation program in Houston since being dismissed from the Tigers, according to a television report.

Fox 8 reports that Mathieu's adoptive father, Tryone Mathieu, says that the 20-year-old star cornerback and punt returner known as the "Honey Badger" has been at the Right Step recovery center and is being counseled by former NBA player John Lucas.

Tyrone Mathieu says his son is committed to restoring his health and won't play football until he is confident that his rehab is complete. That may rule out the possibility of Mathieu transferring to a school at the FCS level and playing this season, after which he would be eligible for the NFL draft.

No one from Mathieu's family appeared on camera in the New Orleans television report. Lucas has not returned a phone message left by The Associated Press.

LSU has said that about 20 college football programs have asked for permission to speak with Mathieu about transferring. Mathieu has visited McNeese State in Lake Charles, La., where classes began Wednesday.

Nicholls State in Thibodaux, La., also has been granted permission to speak with Mathieu but has not met with him yet. Classes at Nicholls begin Aug. 22.

It remains unclear what Mathieu's future may hold if he sits out this season entirely. LSU coach Les Miles has declined to close the door entirely on the possibility, however remote, that Mathieu could play for LSU again in 2013. Miles said last Friday, when he announced Mathieu's dismissal, it would make more sense for Mathieu to transfer. Since then, he has said he can only guarantee Mathieu won't be playing for LSU in 2012 and declined to speculate beyond that.

Miles and LSU officials have also said that they've offered Mathieu whatever help he needs to transfer.

The only public statements Mathieu has made since his dismissal consist of a few posts on the social network website Twitter, where he has also changed his avatar from a photo of himself in an LSU uniform to a motto displayed in white letters on a black background, reading: "Be yourself. There is something that you can do better than any other. Listen to the inward voice and bravely obey that."

One of his recent posted messages says: "Patience.... Sometimes you have to stop doing what is easy and begin to do the things that are hard."

Mathieu emerged as one of college football's biggest stars in 2011, his sophomore season, and was a Heisman Trophy finalist.

He also won the Bednarik Award as national defensive player of the year last season. He scored four touchdowns ? two on punt returns and two on fumble returns ? intercepted two passes, caused six fumbles and recovered four.

He was expected to play a leading role in LSU's effort to return to a second consecutive national title game.

Last season, LSU's only defeat was a 21-0 loss to Alabama in the BCS championship game.

Va. jobless rate rises to 5.9 pct in July | WashingtonExaminer.com

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) ? Virginia's jobless rate rose for the second time in as many months after remaining steady at the lowest rate in three years.

The Virginia Employment Commission said Friday Virginia's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate rose 0.2 percentage points to 5.9 percent in July. The rate is still 0.5 percentage points lower than a year ago and follows a similar pattern to last year when the jobless rate increased during the summer months.

Virginia's jobless rate overall has been trending down since January 2010, when joblessness peaked at 7.3 percent.

"It'll be interesting to see in the next several months how that (pattern) plays out," said Ann Lang, a senior economist with the state agency.

Lang said the rate inched up in July as the number of unemployed rose and the labor force ? the number of people working or actively looking for a job ? contracted.

The state agency said 52,216 Virginians were receiving regular unemployment benefits in July. That's down from 55,197 in June and down from 55,195 in July 2011.

The rate is still below the national average, which rose slightly to 8.3 percent.

The Labor Department said unemployment rates rose in 44 states last month, the most states to show a monthly increase in more than three years and a reflection of weak hiring nationwide. Rates fell in 2 states and Washington, and were unchanged in four.

Nationwide, hiring improved in July after three months of tepid hiring. Monthly job gains have averaged 150,000 this year. That's barely enough to accommodate population growth. As a result, the unemployment rate is the same as when the year began.

In Virginia, nonfarm payroll employment decreased by 24,500 jobs in July after five consecutive months of increases. Employment typically falls in July with the summer release of non-teaching service workers from public school systems across the state.

Increases were seen in leisure and hospitality, trade and transportation, professional and business services, finance, and the construction industry. Losses were seen in total government, private education and health services, manufacturing, the information sector and miscellaneous services. Employment in the mining industry was unchanged.

seeking help with new collaborative e-book...thanks - Family Tree ...

I am currently in the process of developing a new e-book to supply to members of a website that is currently in development, www.YourFamilyHx.com (Your Family History: Your Home On The Web). I wanted to create a book by people in the know about genealogy but who aren't necessarily genealogists, of course if you are then by all means let me know. The title of the book is "Uncovering Your Family History: Tips and Tricks to Help With The Digging". I am developing it in InDesign so I am planning on eventually selling the book on Amazon.com, our website, Lulu.com and other places. Here is where you all come in. I would like to ask anyone who is interested in contributing to this book to place your thoughts, tricks, tips, stories, etc. on this posting with your name (as much or as little of your name as you like, I will leave that up to you) and your website link if you have one and any business info that you would like me to include under the resources section of the book. I want to make this book as much about all of you as I can since that is the point. This is a great way to get your ideas out there and to help others with uncovering their roots and contributing the genealogy community as a whole. Also, a great section of the website that is being developed as well is a section devoted to the "Back Stories" of those folks who would like to share them, I will give you that link, the rest of the site is actually in the process of being developed so it isn't finished yet but it's coming along great, the link to that page, a form where you can submit your story for inclusion in the database is http://yourfamilyhx.com/genealogy-back-stories-submission-fo... please remember, the site is in beta.

I am anxious to get this off the ground so I am placing a deadline on materials for the book, Volume I, for September 30th, 2012 which is our expected launch date for the website. Anything submitted after that date will be included in subsequent volumes of the book. Of course the information I will receive will be edited and corrected (if necessary) so the contributions aren't going to be treated as quotes but I promise that each and every submission will be looked over carefully, respectively and seriously considered for submission, you have my word on that. In addition, non of the personal information I receive from anyone will ever be used for spam or nefarious marketing techniques. I am a real person, this is a real book, and a real website. I am a web and graphic designer by trade and have developed many different websites.

Other aspects of the website relate to a resources section that I will also ask you folks and others like you to contribute to as well. I don't want to turn this into an advertising thing, that's not why I am writing this. I simply need your help and I also think your voices all need to be heard so please post and I will add your contributions to the site and the e-book with your contact information included...thanks and enjoy your day!

Movie Review: The Tremendously Unremarkable Life of Timothy ...

Location

Wide Release

Dates

Opens Aug 15

The Odd Life of Timothy Green operates according to a simple metaphor. A couple who wants to have children and can?t conceive plants their wishes in a backyard garden. Cue a stroke of Disney magic, and the perfect little boy, Timothy (C.J. Adams), emerges from the mud in the middle of the night. He is there to sort out all of their problems ? father Jim Green (Joel Edgerton?s) troubles at the factory and his strained relationship with his father, and mother Cindy Green?s (Jennifer Garner) own work-based bumps and prickly competitive relationship with her sister ? before he returns to the ground from which he came.

There?s potential here to say something about what it means to be a parent, or how children can teach their parents perspective. Timothy is the other, the unexpected, the thing you love but cannot possess. The problem is The Odd Life of Timothy Green is so awash in sentimentality that all its efforts to teach us about life merely deliver corny and canned clich?. This emphatic emotionalism turns the film?s simple metaphor into something more cynical and irrelevant: the perfect little boy so divorced from reality he hardly has anything to say at all. His short life is just one frolic in the forest. One of the great life lessons Timothy teaches his parents comes when they have to overcome their disappointment when their son didn?t score a game winning goal in a soccer game. As his parents moan and groan from the sidelines you get the sense that The Odd Life of Timothy Green is a picture of the child as designer product, and this is a lesson about overcoming buyer?s remorse.

MPEG drafts twice-as-efficient H.265 video standard, sees use in phones as soon as 2013

MPEG drafts twiceasefficient H265 video standard, sees use in phones as soon as 2013

All of that squabbling over H.264 may be rendered moot in the near future. The Motion Picture Experts Group (better known as MPEG) has just let us know that it was quietly drafting a new video standard while everyone was on summer vacation last month: H.265, also called High Efficiency Video Coding, promises to squeeze video sizes with double the efficiency of H.264. As you might imagine, this could lead either to a much smaller video footprint for bandwidth-starved mobile users or a hike to image quality with the same size as before. Imagine fast-loading HD streaming on 4G, or cable TV without all the excess compression, and you've got the idea. Ericsson Research visual technology lead Per Fröjdh anticipates H.265 coming as soon as 2013, when our smartphones and tablets are most likely to play it first. TV and other areas might have to wait, although Fröjdh is offering a consolation prize -- he's teasing a separate MPEG project that could give us glasses-free, compressed 3D video as a standard by 2014.

Sony wins EISA green smartphone award for Xperia P

Android Central

Sony's aluminum-clad Xperia P has been dubbed the "European Green Smartphone of 2012-13" by industry body EISA (European Imaging and Sound Association). The win, which places the Xperia P in good company with fellow EISA winners the HTC One S and Samsung Galaxy S3, is the company's third award from the organization. Last year Sony scooped up two awards for the Xperia Arc and Xperia mini (cameraphone of the year and green phone of the year respectively).

In a statement, the EISA praised the Xperia P's power efficiency, as well as Sony's use of environmentally friendly materials --

“The smart phone market is developing rapidly as models come packed with ever-increasing functionality. Unfortunately, the trend towards the use of bigger screens and embedded batteries can make recycling harder. The Sony Xperia P outperforms the competition in terms of energy performance while making efficient use of materials of environmental concern, such as precious metals and has a low copper content. With the Xperia P, Sony successfully follows the performance of last year’s winner, its Xperia Mini.”

In our review of the phone back in June, we were impressed by the Xperia P's build quality and value for money. And the phone's due to receive an update to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich soon, which should drastically improve its UI and overall responsiveness.

We don't often focus on the environmental cost of smartphones -- though we've seen eco-friendly models like the Samsung Replenish attempting to tap into this market previously. In any case, kudos to Sony for coming out on top on green credentials for a second year running. Would something like this affect your choice of smartphone? Let us know in the comments.

Kermadecs Islands: Whales on the starboard bow

Whales on the starboard bow, was piped throughout the ship this morning. Rochelle Constantine, a marine mammal specialist from the University of Auckland, raced to the armory to get her biopsy gun and camera. Within 20 minutes she and Clinton Duffy were in the RHIB in pursuit of the whales.

Green Lake fills the active part of the Raoul Island caldera. The last eruption, in 2006, deposited mud and killed trees around the lake. Photo Rebecca Priestley.

From the bridge the Navy watch-keepers radioed instructions to Rochelle and her team. On the upper deck, the rest of us watched as a small group of humpback whales blew, fluked and rolled in the water, taunting the scientific team with their proximity but never letting them close enough to take a sample.

Rochelle is involved in a long-running international project aimed at understanding the endangered humpbacks of Oceania one of only two endangered humpback populations in the world. In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, more than 200,000 humpbacks were taken from the Southern Ocean.

But now the whales are protected and things are improving, but slowly. The staff on the island do an annual whale survey. For four hours, one day a year, they sit on the bluffs and look out to sea. Last year, they saw 126 whales.

This has got Rochelle really excited. This is the southernmost location where these whales are near land before their long journey to their summer Antarctic feeding grounds, she says. The humpback whales passing Raoul Island breed in Oceania and feed in Antarctica, but precisely where is not known. Rochelle s long-term aim is to tag some of these whales to track their Pacific migration and find precisely where their breeding and feeding grounds are. This population of humpbacks is not recovering as fast as other populations of humpbacks and Rochelle hopes to link this to something in the environment where they feed.

On her second trip of the day, after a circumnavigation of the island, Rochelle and her team came across a pod of nine bottlenose dolphins, including one calf. They got one biopsy sample and lots of great photos of the dorsal fins we can tell each individual by the nicks on their dorsal fins, says Rochelle.

Meanwhile, back on the island, the GNS Science and MetService teams are busy doing their annual checks and repairs of their monitoring equipment. Department of Conservation staff take monthly measurements of the temperature of the crater lake, monitor CO2 levels for Scripps Oceanographic Institute, and put up a daily weather balloon to monitor the winds in the upper atmosphere. There is also a tsunami gauge, an automatic weather station, a network of seismographs and a camera that transmits photographs of the caldera back to the Geonet network.

On the ship, there s been more nighttime shark wrestling. Clinton Duffy now has two smoothhound sharks to take back to Auckland Museum to form the type series of this yet-to-be-described species, and fin samples from 17 Galapagos sharks and another five smoothhounds. Most of the Galapagos sharks were young, less than two-and-a-half feet (one meter) in length, but five of the largest sharks, from about 2.8 to 3.8 feet (114 to 151 meters) long, he tagged with streamer tags. Any reports of the sharks being recaught will give Clinton information about the range of the shark.

Clinton has his quota, so that s it for the night fishing. Tonight we re having a barbecue on the flight deck.
