?Shangri-La we recorded in what we call the ?Western American Utopian Triangle,? which is Portland, Oregon; Los Angeles, California; and Marfa, Texas,? explained Bechtolt. ?We chose those places because they each have deep personal and YACHT-specific history; Claire and I both grew up in Portland, and Los Angeles is where we met, and Marfa is where we decided to be working?partners.?

Neighbor arrested in mosque firebombing

EUGENE, Ore.?? Federal officials arrested a 24-year-old man on charges of firebombing an Oregon mosque last year and said he was motivated by racial hatred following the arrest of a Muslim man accused of plotting to set off a car bomb in Portland.

Cody Crawford, who has been under investigation since the Corvallis mosque was torched Nov. 28, was arrested Wednesday night at a home in the nearby town Monmouth. Officials said he did not resist arrest.

He was indicted on charges of damaging religious property for racial reasons, which is a hate crime, and using fire to commit a felony.

"This was an attack on religious freedom and an attack on the American way of life," said Dwight Holton, U.S. attorney for Oregon.

Story: DOJ official: Muslims face rising discrimination

The mosque firebombing occurred just two days after FBI agents arrested a Somali-American, Mohamed Osman Mohamud, in a sting operation at Portland's annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony. Mohamud was charged with plotting to kill people at the ceremony by igniting a car bomb.

Mohamud had occasionally worshipped at the Corvallis mosque.

The mosque's office burned, but nobody was hurt.

Crawford appeared briefly in court Thursday, did not enter a plea, and was ordered held in jail while legal proceedings go forward.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Bud Fitzgerald said Crawford has bipolar disorder and is an alcoholic ? and would be a flight risk if released.

'Jihad goes both ways'
Court documents show that three weeks after the mosque firebombing, in unrelated encounters with police, Crawford ranted about Muslims, said Christians are capable of jihad and told an officer he resembled President Barack Obama.

"You look like Obama. You are a Muslim like him. Jihad goes both ways. Christians can jihad too," a court document quotes Crawford as telling a McMinnville officer Dec. 14.

The document says Crawford told officers "only Christians could understand him, that he was a Christian warrior that they were persecuting," and that "you will never know the truth about the mosque."

Crawford also said he did not torch the mosque, according to the affidavit.

Crawford had been arrested Dec. 14 after causing a disturbance at a gas station by shining a flashlight at a car, "talking about terrorists and Muslims," and telling a witness he would "come back and kill you if you call the cops," according to the document.

Crawford was arrested again Dec. 16, this time in Corvallis, for waving a knife around in his front yard, authorities said. He was taken to a local hospital for a mental evaluation, where he told a detective, "If you believe in jihad, you're working for the wrong God. You're a jihadist." Crawford also said, "Muslims are cool. Jihadists are not."

Law enforcement officers began looking at Crawford as a possible suspect in the firebombing early in the investigation.

Story: Mosque plot suspect planted bomb in airport in '85

Federal and local officials questioned people living in the neighborhood, including Crawford, who was living with his mother and sister. When officers showed Crawford a blue Maglite flashlight they had found outside the mosque, Crawford told them it looked like his.

In a search of his house, police and the FBI took DNA samples and seized computers, digital camera equipment, a gas can and other evidence.

According to the court document, lab tests showed Crawford is a "potential major contributor" of DNA on the flashlight found near the mosque.

As they analyzed Crawford's computer, investigators found that in a Facebook update on the day after the FBI sting, Crawford wrote he had seen Mohamud at the Corvallis mosque.

"That guy on the news used to go to the mosque that is right in frnt (sic) of my house," the Facebook post read, according to the court document.

On Nov. 27 and 28 Crawford conducted numerous Internet searches for news articles about the Portland bomb plot, the affidavit states.

A sweet young man
After his house was searched last year, neighbors described Crawford as a sweet young man who loved going to the local community college and was a good dad to his 4-year-old boy.

But Crawford has had frequent run-ins with police. In years past he has been accused of assault, breaking a window when he was in jail, throwing a cup of urine at a deputy, dealing drugs, burglary, criminal trespassing and other crimes.

Even Crawford's relatives have expressed worry about his behavior. After he was thrown into a county jail in 2009, his sister told a sheriff's deputy he was "delusional," that he "had not been himself lately" and that he said he worked with the CIA, according to a sheriff's office report.

His mother said last year that Crawford has been diagnosed with high-functioning autism. She declined to comment when reached on her cell phone Thursday.

In an interview with The Associated Press last December, Crawford said he is "100 percent innocent" of the mosque firebombing, that he's a peaceful person and that he does not dislike Muslims.

"They're all just normal people. We are all people," Crawford said at the time.

If convicted on both counts, Crawford faces a mandatory minimum of 10 years in prison, and a maximum of 30 years.

1 1 / 2 cups cooking apples, peeled and cut into 1 / 2 inch slices
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1 teaspoon nutmeg alternate layers of squash and apples in an 8 ? x 8 ?pan, ending with apples on top layer. Sprinkle spices over top layer. Cover pan with foil and bake in oven at 350 degrees F for about 45-60 minutes until squash is tender. Remove foil and bake another 10-15 minutes to remove excess fluid that has accumulated. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F . Lightly grease a baking sheet with spray margarine or cooking. Cut the pumpkin into slices 1 / 4 inch thick. Remove the seeds in each slice and arrange the squash in a single layer on baking sheet. Bake the slices for 8 minutes, turn and sprinkle with a little maple syrup and cinnamon. Analysis: Fed would get little bang from balance sheet tweak (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? Facing pressure to keep money printing in check, U.S. central bankers are mulling a modest approach to stimulus that would give the struggling economy only a tiny boost -- if it helps at all.

After two rounds of bond purchases that have pumped $2.3 trillion into the banking system, the Federal Reserve could buy long-term Treasury debt while selling short-term securities it already holds.

The idea, outlined by Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke in July, would be to lower long-term interest rates without increasing the money supply. That in theory could spur home purchases by lowering benchmark rates for mortgages. It could also make it cheaper for companies to borrow so they can buy more equipment.

Such a plan could also weaken the dollar and increase stock prices, which might boost exports and make people feel more positive about the economy.

But many analysts doubt growth would improve much unless the Fed injects a lot more money into the economy.

"I don't think the impact on the real economy is going to be meaningful" without more aggressive Fed action, said Troy Davig, a former Fed economist now at Barclays Capital in New York.

The Fed has already slashed overnight interest rates to near zero. Earlier this month, it said it thought it would keep rates low for at least the next two years.

Of course, it could still summon more dollars and inject them into the system, but higher inflation and political pressure create an imposing hurdle for such bold action.

That leaves relatively underwhelming options.

Davig crunched numbers for the Fed's last stimulus plan to pump $600 billion into the economy by purchasing government debt -- a program dubbed "QE2" -- and estimated it would add about a half percentage point to growth this year.

Bernanke is likely to outline his options when he takes the podium at a conference in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, on Friday.

Yet he cannot work magic.

Even the most aggressive campaign to lower rates without printing money could add just one- or two-tenths of a percentage point to next year's growth rate, Davig said.

Thomas Lam, an economist with OSK-DMG in Singapore, arrived at a similar conclusion, albeit considering a less-aggressive Fed strategy. Under that scenario, the Fed would reinvest money from maturing short-term bonds it holds in long-term assets.

Lam sees such a program adding between one- and three-tenths of a percentage point to growth over a year, and perhaps more if markets respond well to the measure. For example, by bringing down long-term Treasury rates, yield-hungry investors could pile into riskier assets like corporate bonds, making it cheaper for companies to borrow.

PUSHING ON A STRING

The Fed would likely launch some kind of bond-trading plan despite concerns it might not yield big results, analysts say. Every bit of growth helps.

Yet some are doubtful the Fed can do much at all by pushing interest rates lower.

Despite all the money given to banks, lending standards have tightened since the financial crisis.

Commercial real estate developer Andy Farbman could not get a loan recently to buy an office building in downtown Chicago worth just under $10 million.

"It wasn't the cost of the capital. The capital didn't exist," said Farbman, president and chief executive of Southfield, Michigan-based NAI Farbman.

Because the loan wasn't there, Farbman paid cash, which meant less investment capital for other ventures.

Other companies aren't even interested in borrowing money because the weak economy is keeping consumer demand low. Similarly, the housing market keeps on weakening despite historically low interest rates.

In the parlance of economists, using monetary policy to boost growth is like trying to push on a string.

"What is a 2 percent 10-year yield going to do that a 2.5 percent 10-year yield didn't do?" said Jacob Oubina, an economist as RBC Capital Markets in New York, referring to the level of return on a 10-year Treasury note.

Oubina thinks QE2 was a net drag on the economy because, in his view, it pushed commodity prices higher. That might have led consumers to spend more on imported goods like fuel, dragging on gross domestic product.

Others are more optimistic. Former Fed board Governor Larry Meyer said a really aggressive bond trade could have a bigger impact than QE2, but such a trade was unlikely because the Fed would be more vulnerable to losses on its investments. Still, a more plausible trade could give the economy a modest boost, he said in a report for Macroeconomic Advisers.

Also seeing benefits from the trade, economists at Goldman Sachs think an aggressive campaign by the Fed to buy long-term bonds while selling short-term assets could boost real GDP growth by up to three-tenths of a percentage point in the year after any announcement.

That would be at least a bit of good news for U.S. companies.

"I'm not sure that we've seen any particular impact from QE1 or 2," said Hormel Foods Corp CEO Jeff Ettinger.

"(But) if consumers can get more comfortable with their financial position, that's good for business, period."
