The British Airways jet carrying Knox landed at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport about 5:09 p.m., one day after an Italian court cleared the 24-year-old college student of murder and freed her after nearly four years in prison.

Wearing a sweater and black pants, Knox walked into a terminal area for a news conference in front of supporters and dozens of national and international reporters and was greeted by cheers.

After her lawyer, father and mother spoke briefly, Knox stood shakily at a podium set up in a garage area for her first words to the public since she was released.

"They're reminding me to speak in English, because I'm having problems with that," said Knox, who spent nearly four years in an Italian prison.

Theodore Simon, a Philadelphia attorney who was part of Knox's defense team, saidthat Knox asked for prayers for the family of Meredith Kercher, the 21-year-old English woman who was found brutally slain on Nov. 1, 2007, in the home she shared with Amanda Knox in Perugia, Italy.

But he said the Italian appeals court's ruling showed that Knox was innocent.

"We couldn't have made it without you people out there who were supporting us," said Knox's father, Curt Knox.

Knox and her former boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, had been convicted of murdering Kercher in what prosecutors called a sex fantasy gone awry. But on Monday, the Italian appeals court overturned their convictions.

The court's decision, fueled by doubts over DNA evidence, stunned the victim's family and angered the prosecution, which insists that she was among three people who killed Kercher. But for Knox's grandmother Elisabeth Huff, "it was like the weight of the world had gone."

Speaking to reporters outside his home in West Seattle after his daughter arrived home, Curt Knox said the family had been on the aircraft when they saw reports that the Italian prosecutor would challenge the appeals court decision.

He said his daughter would need time to "re-connect" with friends. He refused to tell reporters whether his daughter was at his house or elsewhere.

Asked how her imprisonment might change his daughter, he said: "I think this experience will possibly change what she wants to do with her life."

He said he thought his daughter eventually would re-enroll at the University of Washington.

Her family steadfastly argued her case during her four years in prison, and her advocates set up a group called Friends of Amanda Knox to help the family with its crushing legal fees.

Her neighborhood in West Seattle, framed by Puget Sound waters on three sides, is one of Seattle's oldest neighborhoods and is known for its strong sense of community.

"WELCOME HOME AMANDA," read the marquee at a record store in the neighborhood where Knox grew up. Another welcome sign was hung at her father's house.

"She should be free, it's really sad that she was in prison for four years," 47-year-old Cora Ploetz said at the Westwood Village shopping center, a few miles from the home of Curt Knox, Amanda's father.

Ploetz's friend, Ken Iverson, said he felt relief for Knox.

"I was under the impression it was like the Inquisition," Iverson, 63, said of the court proceedings against the college student.

Farewell to Italy
Knox left Perugia's Capanne prison Monday night amid cheers that a companion compared to those at a soccer stadium.

Hundreds of inmates ? most of them in the men's wing ? shouted "Amanda, ciao!" and "Freedom!" as she walked into the central courtyard, said Corrado Maria Daclon, head of the Italy-US Foundation, which championed Knox's cause.

"They were screaming like crazy," said Daclon, who accompanied Knox in her first hours of freedom. Daclon said Knox jumped a little for joy and waved to the prisoners.

In a letter released hours before she left Italy, Knox thanked those Italians who supported her. "Those who wrote, those who defended me, those who were close, those who prayed for me," Knox wrote, "I love you."

"During the trip from Perugia to Rome, Amanda was serene," said Daclon, who was with Knox in the car.

Knox flew from Rome to London, where she took a direct flight to Seattle, flying business class in the upper deck of a British Airways 747 with full-length seat and menu options including champagne, smoked salmon and prawn salad.

Reporters on board the flight hoping to talk to Knox, now a tabloid staple on two continents, were blocked on the stairs by a flight attendant who politely informed them that the family would speak publicly only after the plane touched down at Sea-Tac Airport.

As the plane neared Seattle, the flight crew told reporters that once the plane landed, they would have to remain seated while customs officials escorted Knox and her entourage out of the plane. "You will not see her," the cabin crew chief said. After the plane landed, Knox and her family were taken by shuttle van to go through customs.

Prosecutor not giving up
Back in Italy, prosecutor Giuliano Mignini expressed disbelief at the innocent verdicts of Knox and Sollecito. Mignini maintains that Knox, Sollecito and another man killed Kercher during a drug-fueled sex game.

Mignini said he will appeal to Italy's highest criminal court after receiving the reasoning behind the acquittals, due within 90 days.

"Let's wait and we will see who was right. The first court or the appeal court," Mignini said. "This trial was done under unacceptable media pressure."

One conviction in the slaying still stands: that of Ivory Coast native Rudy Hermann Guede, who sentence was cut to 16 years in his final appeal. His lawyer said Tuesday he will seek a retrial.

Study: Worst hospitals treat larger share of poor

CHICAGO (AP) ? The nation's worst hospitals treat twice the proportion of elderly black patients and poor patients than the best hospitals, and their patients are more likely to die of heart attacks and pneumonia, new research shows.

Now, these hospitals, mostly in the South, may be at higher risk of financial failure, too. That's because the nation's new health care law punishes bad care by withholding some money, says the lead author of the study published Wednesday in the journal Health Affairs.

"These hospitals are going to have a much harder time in the new funding environment," said Dr. Ashish Jha of the Harvard School of Public Health, who led the study. "I worry they're going to get worse over time and possibly even fail. I worry that we're going to see a bunch of that happening over the next three to five years."

Under the Affordable Care Act, hospitals that fail to improve will see their Medicare payments shrink by 1 percent starting October 2012. That could jeopardize some hospitals already on the brink of closure, Jha said.

That unintended consequence of the health overhaul could increase health disparities for minorities, Jha said.

"We have to make sure we pay attention to what the results of those policies are and be ready to change directions if they're causing harm in the marketplace," Jha said.

The study doesn't name the 178 hospitals the researchers rated as "worst" because of their low quality of care and high costs. A data use agreement with Medicare prevented the researchers from identifying the hospitals publicly.

The study, funded by the Commonwealth Fund, found 122 "best" hospitals with high quality and low costs. Those best hospitals were more likely to be in the Northeast, to be nonprofit and to have cardiac intensive care units compared to the worst hospitals.

Elderly blacks made up 15 percent of patients in the worst hospitals and about 7 percent in the best hospitals. There were similar differences for people on Medicaid, the state-federal health program for the poor. Worst-hospital patients with heart attacks or pneumonia were more likely to die than similar patients at the best hospitals.

Medicare chief Don Berwick called the study "valuable, but not completely new." He said the federal government is working to help all hospitals improve.

"We know they can improve," even if they treat sicker or disadvantaged patients, Berwick said. "There are examples of safety net hospitals that are some of the best in the country." He cited Denver Health, which has low death rates despite treating a large share of poor patients.

The health law's so-called "value-based purchasing" rewards hospitals for their rate of improvement, not just for attaining goals, Berwick said. So hospitals that start farther behind can get rewarded for making efforts to catch up. And the law provides money for hospital improvement programs.

"If I were talking to safety net hospitals, I would say, 'I know it's hard. Here's some help, and if you start (improving), you'll get rewarded for starting,'" Berwick said.

For the study, the researchers used data from six sources to determine which hospitals were worst and best. They divided the hospitals into four ranked groups for quality of care and divided them again into four ranked groups for cost.

Of 3,229 hospitals analyzed, 122 were in the top group for quality and also in the group that had the lowest costs. The researchers compared those hospitals to the 178 that were in the bottom group for quality and had the highest costs.

"What can we do to take the lessons from the high-performing institutions and help the low performers improve?" Jha asked. In markets outside of health care, business closures don't so directly affect people's survival, he said, but "here, there are tens of thousands of lives at stake."

With the health law's expansion of insurance in 2014, patients may have more choice in hospitals. But most patients don't use tools like Hospital Compare to find the best ones nearby, Jha said. Hospital Compare is a government website that rates how hospitals measure up to certain standards, such as giving heart attack patients aspirin.

"People go to hospitals because they've always gone there or their families have always gone there or their doctors have always referred them there," Jha said.

Nancy Foster of the American Hospital Association said the group is worried about whether the new funding formula will put safety net hospitals at financial risk, but believes all hospitals can improve.

"There's no hospital in the country right now that doesn't want to do the best for the patients it serves," Foster said. "That's where research comes in and sharing of good results on how to improve."

At Saturday?s Fishing Rodeo at Harbor Island , kids from kindergarten to 8^th grade came out to try their luck in the 20^th annual competition sponsored by the Village of Mamaroneck Recreation and the Harrison-Mamaroneck Rotary Club.

With the nearby soccer fields?soaked with water, cancelling the day?s games, all of the action was down at the?fishing pier behind the beach pavilion.

This is a?popular spot for all sorts of fisherman.? My son Max who participated but didn?t win, says it?s an unlucky place, sour grapes perhaps.? But regardless, the Rodeo event provided clams for bait and decent casting weather.

Every day can be a fishing day if you?re a ?fishhead? like the owner of the Harbor?s?bait and tackle shop, Molly Roze, likes to call kids like Max.

He and his fishing buddies have been spending time at Larchmont?s 22 acre Sheldrake Lake in the 60 acre expanse of the former reservoir off of Weaver Road.? It?s known that the perch are abundant right around the hour where the mosquitoes are also feeding.? A note of warning for the drivers of these avid anglers; bring your own chair and use the facilities beforehand.

Or you can opt to hang at the creek behind the Mamaroneck train station where not only do the carp come-a-bitin?, but the eels do as they thrash their way through the garbage sitting bedside left by weary travelers.? Make no mistake, these American?eels are actually edible, even if you would rather get a hook in your eye than eat one.

You could drive to New Rochelle to the lovely Paine Lake, 2 acres of pond run by Parks and Recreation but nestled in a suburban enclave of pricey homes that cause these passer by-ers to wonder why you?re just hanging around their ?hood in your car.

We used to fish off the dock at our own Greenhaven Beach in Rye, but when Hurricane Irene took out our pier, we could only go out?in waders during low tide, when the smelliest of fish made the whole sport rather questionable.

Last week we went to the pier at Rye?s Playland.? Instead of being immersed in the pursuit of striped bass, I was distracted by the grieving family, all dressed in white flowing clothes, carefully handling a small altar table filled with fresh flowers that were thrown into the water along with what appeared to be ashes.? Without wanting to intrude even mentally you couldn?t help but think it was a whole new twist to Jersey?s?swimming with the fishes.

But like the great, troubled famed fisherman Ernest Hemingway believed, ?fishing was healing?.

Even if this includes catching what was considered the elusive (a whopping ten pounds) catfish like Max did this summer in the Chesapeake, sitting on it until we came in from a boat ride, and then asking the neighbor fisherman to behead it because no one amongst had the guts, or rather the experience, to do it.

The Fishing Rodeo should be a popular thing.? I think with the Jewish holiday weekend there were less kids then there might have been and evidently the fish were in the know; it was the first year that no one actually caught a fish.? The first prize went to Mike Barbieri, and then two other boys for catching crabs.

Oh well.? Like the nature guy Henry David Thoreau liked to say, ?Many men go fishing all of their lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after.?
