Job Summary
 Caltech invites nominations and applications for the position of University Librarian. This position is charged with the leadership of the Institute's library system and aligning library operations and services with the Institute's objectives and strategic goals.
The mission of the California Institute of Technology is to expand human knowledge and benefit society through research integrated with education. The faculty investigates the most challenging, fundamental problems in science and technology in a singularly collegial, interdisciplinary atmosphere, while educating outstanding students to become creative members of society. In this environment, the library provides scholarly resources and advanced information services equipped to meet the evolving needs of the Caltech community in a timely, cost-effective manner.
The University Librarian, a member of the faculty reporting to the Provost, provides overall leadership of the Caltech library system, which is composed of five libraries, digital repositories, the archives, and special collections, and is staffed by 22 librarians and other professionals and approximately 11 support staff members, plus student employees. Caltech seeks a seasoned administrator with exceptional managerial, leadership, and interpersonal skills to inspire and advocate for library-based programs.
Job Duties
Organizes and communicates strategic direction for the library programs
 Establishes and fosters the mission and vision of library services both on campus and within the library
 Works with the Faculty Library Committee to facilitate communication and decision making
 Serves on faculty committees to keep community aware of the library-based programs offered by the Institute
 Initiates and participates on departmental or cross-departmental teams to address special projects or needs at Caltech
 Collaborates broadly with campus, academic and library leadership internally and externally to maximize benefits from library services
 Represents the library and its expertise and capabilities across the campus
 Develops and ensures sustaining relationships with administrators, division chairs, faculty, research groups and centers, and staff and students to stay abreast of changes and gauge trends in the various campus cultures
 Develops and balances print and digital collections keeping faculty and researcher productivity as well as curriculum needs in mind
 Seeks out opportunities to collaborate with other libraries
 Oversees planning, implementing, marketing, and managing of library initiatives and programs
 Prioritizes library projects based on feasibility, use of resources and institutional impact
 Ensures development and advancement of the library's digital information resources and technology including digital asset and data management strategies and policies for storage, preservation, discovery and access
 Aligns and oversees resources, budget, space and staff to achieve program goals
 Prepares and oversees library budgets and financial administration including gifts
 Oversees overall structure and management of personnel including recruitment
 Applies Institute's policies and procedures, including government regulations, regarding human resources, information resources, intellectual property, and vendor negotiation and contracting
 Basic Qualifications
American Library Association (ALA)-accredited Masters of Library Science (MLS)
 A record of sustained scholarly and professional achievement
 Significant expertise in the sciences or history of science and an understanding of the research environment
 10 years of progressive administrative and managerial academic or research library experience
 Demonstrated ability to lead, evaluate and supervise professional level staff
 Experience with administering a complex budget with competing demands for funds
 Excellent communication and writing skills
 Experience in presenting and instructing in individual and group settings
 Demonstrated record of innovation and project management in libraries
 Advanced understanding of digital technologies and trends
 Skill in advancing digital initiatives and coordinating with information technology units
 Excellent understanding of changes in scholarly communication practices
 Preferred Qualifications
Additional Masters and/or Ph.D. degree
 Significant experience with digital repositories
