Business Innovation: Your Talent Management Strategy Is the Key

On Friday as I backed out of my driveway, I heard news tidbits on the radio about a company that was possibly announcing bankruptcy. As the news recycled, it was announced that it was Kodak that was possibly going to make the announcement.

Also this week, Amazon announced that yes, they are getting into the tablet business with the new Kindle Fire. As a Kindle fanatic, I read everything I could about the product. At the other end of the spectrum, Borders officially closed their last store last week.

The Kodak dilemma was not a real shocker, but I was extremely interested in it. My hobby is photography and I remember buying dozens of boxes of film at a time. I even had a darkroom in my first house. And now, because of slow reaction to the transformation of the photo industry, they are down for the count.

Innovation as part of the business landscape

Amazon is a perfect example of a nimble and innovative company that started out as a mass online book retailer. It has morphed before our very eyes into not only changing the book business, but also as serious competitor to the king of the hill that we know as Apple. They have also transitioned into a mass online retailer. Talk about innovation!

This is the state of affairs of our business landscape today. Either move along in the fast lane or get out the way. If you don?t, you will be literally run over.

All of these successes and failures can be blamed on their strategy, but I take it back a step to the people, because people are the ones that create the strategy. Did the level of talent and engagement differ from an Amazon, Borders, or Kodak? It all comes back to the level of talent and engagement within the organization.

If any company today ignores that part of the equation, they are venturing forward at their own peril.

Is your employee value proposition interesting?

This is the employee value proposition from Amazon ? a place where builders can build. They hire the world?s brightest minds and offer them an environment in which they can invent and innovate to improve the experience for their customers.

This is part of the employee value proposition for Kodak. Every day you make a choice about where you work: which company deserves your talent, your best thinking, and your passion?

Now you tell me which one would you want to work for?

Talent acquisition as the gatekeeper

Talent acquisition should address the strategic value of attracting and hiring the right talent. That means hiring the right person to fit the organization and the job.

Whatever your talent management strategy, it must be aligned with organizational strategy. In other words, take a look at your organizational strategy through the prism of your human capital strategy. If this is not achieved today, talent becomes disconnected from the focus and direction of the organization.

Every strategic direction that is created has ramifications for the talent within the company. What are the strategic roles needed to deliver on this strategy? It is estimated that 10 to 15 percent of the strategic jobs in any company add the most value. Bill Gates once said that if you take away the top 20 employees at Microsoft, it just becomes an ordinary company.

Talent is the elephant in the room

As we run into this quest for innovation, it all comes back to the level of talent within your organization. That starts with the acquisition model you have in place, from your website all the way through the employee life cycle.

To use a manufacturing analogy, you have to have the right quality part in order to build a quality product. That fact is unmistakable.

So, innovation is a bogus word if you do not have the right people on the organization?s bus.

Husband of missing Mo. mom admits threat to in-law (AP)

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. ? A southeast Missouri man suspected in the disappearance of his wife four months ago could pleaded guilty Monday to threatening the relative who now has custody of his 5-year-old triplets.

Clay Waller, 41, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Cape Girardeau to threatening his wife's sister over the Internet. He could face up to five years in prison at sentencing on Dec. 19.

Waller is a suspect in the disappearance of Jacque Waller, who was last seen at her estranged husband's home in Jackson, Mo., on June 1. Although relatives fear the 39-year-old mother is dead, police continue to search for clues in her disappearance. Clay Waller has not been charged in that case.

The couple's children have been staying with Jacque Waller's sister, Cheryl Brennecke, of Bonne Terre, Mo., since the disappearance. Authorities determined that during an Internet forum on the case on July 26, Waller posted a comment directed at Brennecke that read, in part, "You are dead ... I will get you 5, 10, 25 years from now. You have it coming," Assistant U.S. Attorney Larry Ferrell said Monday.

The threat was posted on the Topix website, and federal investigators learned it came from a computer at a Cape Girardeau pawn shop. Waller had asked the store manager to use the computer that night, Ferrell said. After Waller left, the manager reviewed the computer's Internet history and noticed that Waller accessed the Topix site.

Waller admitted in court that he sent the threat, referring to the posting as an "email."

"I sent the email," he told U.S. District Judge Stephen Limbaugh. "I did it."

Waller's attorney, federal public defender Scott Tilsen, acknowledged that the unsolved disappearance of Jacque Waller hangs over the pending sentencing.

"I'm sure the government will argue that he ought to be punished more than the sentencing guidelines because of a crime he hasn't even been charged with," Tilsen said. "Not really the American way."

Ferrell declined comment after the hearing.

The Wallers had been having marital trouble and were on the verge of a divorce, her father, Stan Rawson, of Bonne Terre, said in an interview Monday. They used the same attorney and met with him on June 1 ? the same day Jacque Waller disappeared.

Rawson said Brennecke became suspicious when she couldn't reach her sister later that evening because her sister had confided that Clay Waller had threatened her.

Last month, the Southeast Missourian newspaper in Cape Girardeau cited a one-paragraph FBI supplemental affidavit that said Clay Waller suggested to his father that he had broken Jacque Waller's neck and buried her in a hole that he dug in advance. But Waller has not made any confession to police. Tilsen declined comment on the case involving the missing woman, saying he represents Waller only in the Internet threat case and that Waller does not have an attorney related to his wife's disappearance.

The triplets are now in kindergarten and doing well, but often talk about missing their mother, Rawson said. They continue to wonder if she will ever come home, he said.

"It just tears at your heart," Stan Rawson said.

Garrison lifts No. 22 WVU over Bowling Green ... - WRAL Sports Fan

Garrison lifts No. 22 WVU over Bowling Green

West Virginia running back Dustin Garrison couldn't have imagined this.

In a season already filled with team struggles on the ground, the freshman rushed for 291 yards and two touchdowns to lead No. 22 West Virginia to a 55-10 win over Bowling Green on Saturday.

West Virginia's Geno Smith continued his solid season by throwing for three scores. But for the first time, the Mountaineers (4-1) found balance in their offense.

West Virginia entered the game as one of the worst rushing teams in the FBS with 306 total yards. The Mountaineers compiled 360 yards on the ground Saturday.

"I think we found a running back," West Virginia coach Dana Holgorsen said.

The 5-foot-8, 165-pound Garrison has emerged from a group of young runners that had struggled to gain a foothold. Garrison got his first start against LSU a week ago due to an injury to Andrew Buie and entered Saturday's game with 65 total yards.

With the offensive line opening huge holes that had been lacking in previous games, Garrison had 233 yards by halftime and set a freshman single-game school record. He scored on runs of 19 and 8 yards in a steady rain.

His 291 yards tied for the second-highest total in school history. His 32 carries more than doubled his season total.

"The holes were there," Garrison said. "The linemen were doing their jobs and making holes. Most of the yards that I got came from cutting off blocks that the fullbacks made.

"The game has definitely slowed down a lot since Day One. I think it's showing. I'm seeing the holes a lot faster and hitting them a lot faster. I'm coming off blocks and running defenders into blocks, things like that. It reminds me of high school."

Garrison had seven 200-yard games as a high school senior in Pearland, Texas.

"The more you give it to him and the more he plays, the better he gets," Holgorsen said.

It marked the most rushing yards in a growing niche of high-scoring offenses led by Holgorsen, who was the offensive coordinator at Oklahoma State last year and at Houston the two years before that.

"To be honest with you, we were more worried about stopping the passing game," Bowling Green coach Dave Clawson said. "Their quarterback is excellent and they really stretch you across the field."

The Mountaineers showed no signs of coasting between last week's draining home loss to LSU and the upcoming Big East opener with Connecticut. West Virginia's 643 total yards were the most in four years and the highest ever at its 31-year-old stadium.

"We told them all week to become a smarter football team," Holgorsen said. "We had one penalty and zero turnovers. You've got to get up for whatever game you're playing."

West Virginia did, holding the Mid-American Conference's highest-scoring offense to 217 total yards. The Falcons (3-2) entered the game averaging 38.5 points.

Bowling Green's Matt Schilz came to Morgantown tied for the FBS lead with 14 touchdown passes. He threw for an early score but lost a fumble and was intercepted three times, twice by Keith Tandy. Schilz finished 13 of 25 for 114 yards.

He didn't have much help available. Bowling Green's leading rusher, Anthon Samuel, missed the game with an injured ankle, while Eugene Cooper, the team's leading receiver, sat out with an unspecified NCAA clearinghouse issue.

"You lose a game by 45 points, to say you lost it because of two guys. That would be a stretch," Clawson said.

West Virginia overcame two early miscues on special teams by scoring on five consecutive first-half drives.

Garrison fumbled the ball inside the Bowling Green 10 late in the second quarter but West Virginia lineman Tyler Rader recovered. Smith found Brad Starks in the end zone on the next play for a 38-10 halftime lead.

Smith completed 18 of 30 passes for 238 yards. His other scoring tosses were 33 yards to Ivan McCartney and 15 yards to Ryan Nehlen. It was the first career touchdown catch for the grandson of WVU Hall of Fame coach Don Nehlen.

Smith was replaced by backup Paul Millard on West Virginia's first series of the fourth quarter.

West Virginia's special teams were awful against LSU and the problems continued early against Bowling Green.

The Falcons' Jerry Gates fumbled away the opening kickoff that led to a West Virginia field goal, but he returned the ensuing kickoff 77 yards to setting up Schilz's 18-yard scoring toss to Ray Hutson.

Cory Smith's 14-yard punt on West Virginia's next possession gave the Falcons the ball at the 50. Hutson took a reverse handoff and floated a pass toward a wide open Alex Bayer, but Tandy got there just in time to break it up in the end zone. The Falcons settled for a field goal and a 10-3 lead and didn't score again.

1 dead in Turkey explosion in Mediterranean town (AP)

ANKARA, Turkey ? A bomb blast in a Mediterranean town in southern Turkey killed one person and wounded two others on Friday, officials said.

Dogan news agency said the bombing in the town of Kemer was carried out by a sucide bomber targeting a paramilitary police station. The suspected bomber detonated the explosives near a sentry box after failing to reach the station, the agency said.

The explosion damaged several cars and smashed windows of nearby buildings, it said.

The blast came 10 days after a car bombing near a school in the capital, Ankara, killed three people and wounded 34 others. A Kurdish militant group, the Kurdistan Freedom Falcons or TAK, claimed responsibility for the car bombing and threatened more attacks in retaliation to what it called the government's "war" against the rebels.

The same group had also claimed a small bombing in Kemer on Aug. 28 that wounded 10 people, including four Swedish nationals. A suicide bombing, also claimed by the Falcons, had left 32 people wounded in Istanbul in November 2010.

Kurdish rebels, who are fighting for autonomy in the Kurdish-dominated southeast, have dramatically stepped up attacks in Turkey, killing dozens of security force members and at least 14 civilians since July. They have also abducted state employees, including 12 teachers.

The rebels intensified their attacks after accusing the government of not responding to their demands, including autonomy and education in the Kurdish language ? which Turkey fears could divide the country along ethnic lines.

In a nationwide crackdown on alleged Kurdish rebel sympathizers, police have detained hundreds of supporters of a pro-Kurdish party as Turkish warplanes have bombed Kurdish rebel bases in neighboring northern Iraq.

In latest reported violence in the country's Kurdish-dominated southeast, the rebels killed two soldiers in an ambush in Sirnak province late Thursday, the Interior Ministry said Friday. Three rebels were killed in an ensuing clash, it said. After the attack, the military declared several hilly areas along the Iraqi border off limits to civilians.

The conflict has killed tens of thousands of people since 1984.
