Important GOP Primary, Caucus Dates in 2012 (ContributorNetwork)

Dates for voting in the Republican primaries and caucuses continue to be set. Reuters reports the Iowa GOP decided Monday to set its caucus date for Jan. 3. That would match the earliest caucus ever. State party committees are generally the ones who decide when elections and caucuses are held.

Here is a look at when states choose their candidates for president in 2012.

Jan. 3: Iowa caucus

NPR reports the Iowa GOP set the date of Jan. 3 to stay in line with its "first in the nation" status in the nominating process. The move comes as other states such as Florida, Nevada and South Carolina moved up their dates. New Hampshire won't decide until November as to when it primary will be, but it has made it clear it wants to be one of the first. Secretary of State Bill Gardner may even put it as early as Dec. 6.

Jan. 14: Nevada caucus

Nevada moved its caucus to Jan. 14 in response to Florida's GOP moving up its state's primary election to late January. New Hampshire's primary may be between the Iowa and Nevada caucuses or before Iowa's.

Jan. 21: South Carolina primary

CNN reports South Carolina moved its primary election to Jan. 21 after Florida's decision. Because of Florida and subsequently South Carolina, Nevada and Iowa moved their dates closer to 2011 to ensure they are "first in the nation."

Jan. 31: Florida primary

Florida defied the wishes of the Republican National Committee and chose to have its primary Jan. 31. The reasons Florida moved up the election are twofold. Tampa is hosting the Republican National Convention during the summer and the state has a larger population than the other four first-voting states combined.

Feb. 7: Missouri, Colorado, Minnesota

Missouri's case is interesting. The legislature and Gov. Jay Nixon wanted to move the primary earlier in defiance of the national party. When they failed to do so, the state's GOP decided to hold caucuses March 17 instead. Missouri will have a primary election Feb. 7, then caucuses March 17 to choose delegates to the Republican National Convention. Minnesota's precinct caucuses will also be held early in February, as will Colorado's nonbinding caucus.

Feb. 28: Arizona, Michigan

Arizona and Michigan will have primary elections Feb. 28. CBS News states Arizona decided to move ahead of other states to be more relevant to the nominating process. The Holland Sentinel reported Michigan moved its primary to be in line with other elections across the state.

March 6: Super Tuesday

Seven states have GOP primaries or caucuses scheduled for March 6, according to the Washington Post. Only four states are supposed to hold primaries before this date. Idaho, Massachusetts, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont and Virginia are holding some kind of election the Tuesday after the first Monday in March.

March 13: Alabama

Alabama's primary is being held March 13 to stay in line with other states trying to hold elections all together to save money. By this time, usually a winner emerges from each party and there won't be a need to have other elections. But all 50 states are involved in picking party nominees for president.

June 5L New Jersey, California

New Jersey and California have primary elections June 5. Depending on how voters decide, these late primaries may still be viable as Republicans try to narrow the field from eight candidates to one.
