After only nine months since its inception, Male Uprising Guernsey is already making a difference to male cancer suffers on Guernsey. MUG and Prostate Cancer Guernsey have recently provided the funds for two pieces of high-tech scanning equipment for the Urology department at the Medical Specialist Group. The special scanner and biofeedback machine will enable to urology nurses to examine patients more thoroughly and help their specialist advice to be even more valuable for each individual patient.
Mr Owen Cole, Consultant Urologist at the MSG explains: ?The equipment Male Uprising Guernsey and Prostate Cancer Guernsey have kindly funded allows us to offer state of the art care for patients having keyhole surgery for prostate cancer in Guernsey. It means we can reach patient outcomes that are at least equivalent, and hopefully better than the UK average.?
The equipment was funded jointly by Male Uprising Guernsey and Prostate Cancer Guernsey who have been working closely together since MUG?s launch in February 2012.
Prostate Cancer Guernsey been working in Guernsey since 2004 and provides support to those in Guernsey diagnosed with prostate cancer as well as raising funds for the treatment and research of the disease in Guernsey. Last year the charity was chosen by La Grande Mare Golf Dave as its charity of the year and 2011?s club captain ? Martin Shaw ? worked tirelessly to help raise the money that Prostate Cancer Guernsey has used to purchase this equipment. ?We are delighted to help the Urology team by enabling them to purchase this equipment,? explains Robin Penna of Prostate Cancer Guernsey. ?We know it can make a real difference for men with prostate problems.?
MUG?s primary aim is raise awareness of male prostate, testicular and bowel cancer, and encourage men to get tested and treated earlier. Being able to provide this vital equipment to the Medical Specialist Group in our first year shows that we can all, collectively, make a difference to male cancer suffers on Guernsey.
