HARRINGTON PARK ? The main basketball court at Highland Field Park will soon be named after Ken Snyder, a resident who helped to create a summer league in town and left a long-term imprint on the recreation department as a coaching fixture in the community.
Snyder?s family has a story of triumph over early adversity in his life. It?s also the story of a young man finding basketball, becoming interested in the sport and passing his wisdom down to his own family and younger generations.
Snyder, who lost his mother to cancer and his father to tuberculosis at young age, found that his passion in life was playing and teaching the fundamentals of basketball.
?He had it rough, it?s unbelievable all that he?s done to give back,? said his daughter, MaryAlice Snyder Farella. ?My dad?s an extremely modest guy, the [honor] was mentioned in prior years, but he turned [having a street named after him] down.?
A former recreation president who was on the recreation commission for 35 years and 48-year resident of the borough, Snyder has had a hand in the development of local landmarks from George Street Park to Highland Field Park to Pondside Park.
?I think it?s amazing that it?s being done while he?s still alive,? Farella said. ?He contributed years, days and hours and gave kids a place to play. Basketball was his passion. He?s 81-years-old and he still watches college basketball.?
His hard work and dedication to the Harrington Park parks and recreation has now given the modest man recognition that won?t be lost on the local residents, as the court at Highland Field basketball courts will be named after Snyder in the near future.
The Snyder family is a religious Catholic family which attends Our Lady of Victory Church Roman Catholic Church.
Farella said her father was known in town for bringing the Harrington Park Summer Basketball League, a six- to eight-week league backed by the NCAA, to the town for student athletes who were headed to college to play basketball or who already played college basketball. According to a recreation official, the league is no longer in existence.
The league featured athletes from Northern Valley Regional at Demarest and Old Tappan, Bergen Catholic and St. Joseph?s of Montvale.
