In an effort to head off legislation, the Indoor Tanning Association said Thursday that it will implement new procedures for use of their sunbeds by teenage clients.
Under the new protocol minors under the age of 16 will only be permitted to use sunbeds with a physician?s referral. Sixteen- to 17-year-olds may use sunbeds with the written consent from a parent or guardian. The voluntary measures have been adopted by at least 100 tanning salons across the state.
Tommy Kelleher, who owns 14 Tommy?s Tanning salons in Connecticut, said the new protocols that are posted in each of his stores go well beyond the current law that requires parental consent for minors under the age of 16.
In response to the tanning industry?s claim that Environment and Human Health, Inc. is trying to shut down the tanning bed industry ?? EHHI released the following response.
Tom Kelleher, owner of Tommy?s Tanning, alleged to the media the following statement:
?Kelleher and other industry representatives dispute Alderman?s assertions and said she won?t rest until indoor tanning is outlawed. ?What we?re trying to do it operate responsibly, like we always have,? Kelleher said. ?We have no problem with legislation, we have a problem with non-existence.?
Environment and Human Health, Inc. response to that allegation
Environment and Human Health, Inc.? is trying to only protect children (minors) from using tanning beds ? we are not trying to shut down the industry.?? As long as we educate adults that tanning bed use is dangerous ? they can do as they want ? just as people over 18 can smoke cigarettes.?? We do not ban adults from smoking cigarettes.? What we have done as a state and a nation is to educate people that cigarettes are dangerous and let those over 18 smoke if they want.? We do however protect minors from cigarettes ? because they are cancer causing.
Tanning? beds carry the same risk of developing cancer as? cigarettes do ? and therefore tanning bed use for minors should be banned. Adults can do as they choose. Environment and Human Health, Inc., a science based organization of 11 physicians and public health professionals is not alone in this effort.? The The American Academy of Pediatrics, The World Health Organization, American Academy of Dermatology and The American Cancer? Society? have all asked that minors be banned form tanning bed use.
