My L.A. Lifestyle: Botox In a Bottle?

What if you could pull the cork on a red wine and enjoy the highest level of anti-oxidant, anti-aging benefits that would help keep you heart-healthy and younger looking?? And, you could get this for under $20 per bottle?? No sci-fi here, there?s been oodles of press confirming research that drinking red wine has a definite health benefit.?? We pretty much all know that, but we now know that the grape with the highest and healthiest ingredients is the little known and unsung Tannat. ? Why is this wine so healthy for us? Tannat contains the most Oligomeric Proanthocyanidins of any red wine, about triple that of other red wines. Funny, the word doesn?t look like a health benefit and it?d be a challenge even for that ?Mad Man?, Don Draper to wrap some sizzle around. He?d definitely drop this one on Peggy. For our purposes, we?ll call it by its nickname: OPC?s.? This is a chemical substance found in the skins of all red grapes and grape seeds. The thicker the skin, the more OPC?s. Since Tannat has the thickest of skins (always good when you?re not very popular), it has a huge concentration of OPC?s.? You can read all about the anti-aging and health benefits in the book, ?The Red Wine Diet? by Dr. Roger Corder, a cardiovascular expert at the William Harvey Research Institute in London.? Other research has been published in the prestigious journal ?Nature? which stated: "The higher OPC concentration in wines from southwest France is due to traditional wine-making, which ensures that high amounts of OPCs are extracted, and to the flavonoid-rich grape Tannat, which makes up a large proportion of grapes used to produce local wines in the Gers area but is rarely grown elsewhere." Real life scientific evidence of the benefit of Tannat can be found in the records at the d?partement of Gers in southwest France.? The area is home to more than double the national average of men in their nineties. Although this grape has been made into wine for more than 600 years, it still enjoys a cult status.? Born in the Basque region of France and made into wine most famously in the Madiran region, the winemaking area of Gers, it wasn?t until the cuttings emigrated with Basque families into Uruguay that the world began to take notice.? Like the French grape Malbec in Argentina, the Tannat grape was tamed by the Southern Hemisphere conditions.? Today, it?s the main red wine from Uruguay.? In Paso Robles, Tablas Creek has been vinting and selling Tannat for about a decade. This is not a gentle wine, but one with heft.? The younger the wine, the sturdier the tannins.? Tannins are found in grape skins and seeds and they?re what make your teeth feel like they have little wool socks on them.? In Uruguay the ferment the wine in open vats to allow more air to reach the juice, softening the tannins by exposure.? Some winemakers use cement tanks as well as steel for fermentation before gently resting the wine in new French oak barrels. Here are a two to find for in your local wine shop, or online: 2010 Bouza: I recently tasted this wine and was surprised at the amount of fruit in such this young vintage. Bouza is known for quality in its vineyards and winemaking.? Watch this team as they work their magic with Tannat both as a single grape and also blended with Tempranillo.? The color is an inky Ruby and very dense.? Stick your nose into the glass and enjoy the dark fruit and licorice with a spike of spice. ?Make no mistake, there are tannins, but not unpleasant and with a rich meal of steak on the grill (drizzled with a bit of good olive oil) or a rich stew, this wine will be perfect.? ?About $19.00.

2010 Tablas Creek:? This organic winery is located in Paso Robles, most known for their Rhone varietals and owned by the French Perrin family.? So how did the decidedly non-Rhone Tannat sneak into their vineyards?? In the early 90?s one of their French nurserymen brought it back with him as a grape he favored.? Their version has a black-red color also dense.? Again, your nose will be filled with jammy fruits (typical of California) and spice.??This is an elegant wine that would have a great dance with braised short ribs, stews, roasted pork or BBQ ribs.? About $30.00 available from the winery.

Hmmmmm....consider cancelling the Botox treatment and have dinner and a glass of Tannat instead. ?

Tip:? The French Paradox is another well-known book documenting the benefits of red wine.? You can purchase Bouza Tannat at: K&L Wine Merchants, Silverlake Wine and Wine House.? Or, call and order from Du Vin Wine & Spirits
