If you are expecting a French film chronicling the last days of Marie Antoinette, then you may be in for a slight disappointment. Brilliantly directed by the Benoit Jacquot (who also co-wrote the much less impressive script) and starring Diane Kruger as Marie Antoinette and Lea Seydoux, who plays one of the Queen's readers named Sidonie Laborde, and is also the protagonist of this film (for some reason) "Farewell, My Queen" is advertised as the story of the last days of Marie Antoinette, but it's more like the somewhat muted story of the two months before the "last days" of Marie Antoinette. So, even though "Farewell, My Queen" is a better movie than Sofia Coppola's ill advised, indie rock inspired, "Marie Antoinette", due to the faux-final-days story structure, in conjunction with the fact that "Farewell, My Queen" uses Marie Antoinette as a side character, telling the story from the point of view of Sidonie Laborde (a nobody) this is a film which may have many audiences scratching their heads as to why the need to show this particular moment in the life of Marie Antoinette. As I alluded to above, "Farewell My Queen" chronicles a miniscule portion in time during the last months of Marie Antoinette's reign. However, audiences are not treated to "the good part", or the part they undoubtedly came to see. What I mean by this is there are almost no visuals of the actual Revolution, plus (and more importantly) we don't actually get to witness the final days of Marie Antoinette's life simply because "Farewell, My Queen" curiously plays out through the eyes of one of her ladies-in-waiting. Instead, audiences are forced to sit through a pseudo-love story that focuses not on the very interesting end of Marie Antoinette's reign, but on the minutiae right before it! This film is the equivalent of sitting through the love story of Jack and Rose, with the movie ending just before the Titanic strikes the iceberg. Yes, I am aware that this is a script which was adapted from a critically acclaimed novel by Chantal Thomas, BUT it still doesn't make the story's focus any less misguided. I mean, there are some scenes which do attempt to create a somewhat intriguing love story, an aspect which must be fully accredited to some fantastic mood setting by Jacquot, but in the same vein, this film never rises above said simplistic love story. Side Note: Another issue many audiences will likely come across is how frivolously "Farewell, My Queen" throws its viewers right into the deep end of this story, with little exposition. In fact, the greatest individual flaw which hinders "Farewell, My Queen" will be seen in the audiences immediate realization that neither Jacquot's visuals or the engaging performances (which I will speak about later) are going to give those not formally versed in the players of the French Revolution and the fall of Versailles, the background information they may desperately desire, as this film half-introduces more and more characters of seeming importance. So, do yourself a favor, if you are going to see "Farewell, My Queen" (at the very least) peruse the Marie Antoinette Wiki page before going to see this film. With that said, the visuals (the set design in conjunction with the director) are somewhat breathtaking at times, due to Jacquot making some very brave directorial choices, including tons of long takes which trail behind characters as they weave in and out of crowds, giving audiences an intimate feeling of the atmosphere of late 1700's France, and a few beautifully constructed shots of the landscapes. And I guess it doesn't hurt that the two female leads, Seydoux and Kruger, both give engaging performances. But even if Kruger's interpretation of Antoinette is one of the best I've ever seen and Seydoux is so captivating to watch as she effortlessly takes control of the movie every time she is on screen, there is simply not enough in the story or the writing to give reasoning to the eccentric behavior or motives behind the actions of Marie Antoinette or (more importantly) give a reason as to why Sidonie is so infatuated with her. So, even though, in the latter half of the film (more than an hour in) Jacquot does create an atmosphere which allows these characters to somewhat blossom, many will find it hard to care about a Marie Antoinette story that contains no beheadings. Final Thought: Based on a "last days" plot which attempts to imitate a much better film like "Downfall", even with some spectacular direction and two engaging female performances, "Farewell, My Queen" is nothing more than this year's "My Week With Marilyn", telling a story which focuses on characters nobody really cares about, rather than simply creating a storyline around the life/last days of (in this case) Marie Antoinette. So, even if you are a Marie Antoinette fan, with the overall structure the way it is, "Farewell, My Queen" is nothing more than DVD worthy at best. American Airlines has been making headlines as labor and maintenance issues caused 430 flights to be delayed and another 53 cancelled in the past week?largely on flights in and out of Dallas/Fort Worth International. Besides waiting in long lines to reschedule, many passengers had to pay for unexpected meals, overnight stays, and/or transportation.
Will they be reimbursed? Depends what kind of traveler's insurance they carry?and, sometimes, what credit card they used to pay for the flight.
While American had a particularly bad week, they're not the only culprit. Southwest Airlines had 276 flights delayed last week, according to FlightStats.com. Altogether, 1,839 flights were delayed and 120 canceled in the U.S. last week, and another 3,773 were delayed in Europe. If you ended up with one of these ill-fated fares, were you covered?
World MasterCard covers trip cancellation up to the cost of the trip, but not expenses incurred by delays. Members of American AAdvantage frequent flyer program who paid for those cancelled American flights with the AAdvantage MasterCard won't get any help on expenses caused by those 430 delayed flights. Trip cancellation insurance covers trips cancelled by the passenger, prior to departure, due to death or illness. Passengers may have better luck hitting up the airline for expenses caused by a flight the airline cancelled.
Visa Signature does not cover trip delay or cancellation. Those who used the AAdvantage Visa Signature card are out of luck on either delayed or cancelled trips. Visa Signature cards, which also include United Explorer and US Airways, cover lost luggage (up to $3,000 per trip), car rental collision, and travel emergency and accidents, but not delays or cancellations.
Discover Escape covers both cancellation and delays. Your best bet for a reasonably priced card ($60 annual fee) that covers both delays and cancellations is Discover Escape. If you charge a delayed flight on a Discover Escape, you're eligible for up to $150 per day of food and hotel expenses for a scheduled trip on a common carrier delayed over six hours. Discover Escape also covers trip cancellation up to the cost of the trip, luggage reimbursement up to $2,500 per trip, and up to $500,000 in flight insurance.
American Express allows you to purchase add-on insurance for both delays and cancellations as an add-on. Premium cards, such as the American Express Platinum cover both, but you have to pay a $450 annual fee for the privilege. (Platinum comes with a whole lot of perks, so can pay for itself if you travel a lot.)
Dedicated traveler insurance covers delays and cancellations. If you do travel a lot, it might be worth paying for dedicated traveler insurance. Most policies reimburse you $100 to $150 a day for taxis, meals, lodging, and other expenses incurred because of a flight delayed by storm or strike. Some policies also cover pre-paid reservations missed because of the delay. Some, like Travel Guard and Savvy Traveler, allow you to purchase coverage for individual flights. But if you're going to pay $200 annually for insurance, it might be worth investing instead in a premium credit card that also earns you free travel and VIP treatment?airport lounge access, expedited security and boarding, etc.
Elite members get special treatment. If you're an elite member of an airline (flying 25,000 miles or more a year) you have more leverage with flight delays. According to WSJ, American Airlines recently emailed AAdvantage members, promising alternative flights if passengers discovered, on the day of departure, that they would arrive more than an hour later. American's website promises the same to other passengers facing a delay of two or more hours, offering standby seating on earlier domestic flights, full refunds if passengers cancel trips, and flights on other airlines or changes to American flights free of charge.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Italy will expand its economic and social commitments in Libya even as the North African country continues to battle problems that range from unsecured borders to dangerous armed groups, Italy's foreign minister said Friday.
A former colonial ruler of Libya, Italy has decades-solid trade ties with Tripoli, including extensive gas and oil interests.
"We are encouraging Libyan authorities to urgently tackle the issue of safety," Foreign Minister Giulio Terzi told The Associated Press in an interview on Friday.
He noted that Libya's weak security instability contributed to the killing of the U.S. ambassador to Libya, Chris Stevens, along with three other Americans in an attack on the U.S. consulate in the eastern city of Benghazi. And Libya's unsecured borders are a top priority that "must be resolved rapidly," Terzi said.
"We want to expand our partnership with this country, which is so important economically and politically," Terzi said.
He gave no details, but Italy's ties to Libya are strong.
Italy was Libya's colonial ruler in fascist times and went on to develop into Libya's largest trading partner as old resentments matured into mutually beneficial economic ties ? worth ?11 billion before trade was halted in February with the outbreak of civil war. Italy also is dependent on the Arab country's oil.
But Libya has suffered a big security vacuum following last year's killing of longtime dictator Moammar Gadhafi and the collapse of his regime.
The void was quickly filled by local militia groups formed initially of rebel forces that fought Gadhafi's forces in an eight-month rebellion. Since then, they have grown in number and their ranks swelled with youths ready to take the law into their own hands.
"Italy is viewed by Libyans as their first point of reference in Europe," Terzi said. "We intend to increase our presence in every field."

2010 Tablas Creek:? This organic winery is located in Paso Robles, most known for their Rhone varietals and owned by the French Perrin family.? So how did the decidedly non-Rhone Tannat sneak into their vineyards?? In the early 90?s one of their French nurserymen brought it back with him as a grape he favored.? Their version has a black-red color also dense.? Again, your nose will be filled with jammy fruits (typical of California) and spice.??This is an elegant wine that would have a great dance with braised short ribs, stews, roasted pork or BBQ ribs.? About $30.00 available from the winery.
Hmmmmm....consider cancelling the Botox treatment and have dinner and a glass of Tannat instead. ?

In North Carolina, as you well know, we like our science with a side of crazy. The old Flying Burrito Brothers tune says, ?The scientists say it?ll all wash away, but we don?t believe them anymore,? and we love our country music here, so we made quite a splash with the legislative nuh-unhs about sea level rise a while back.?If you recall, we tried to make measuring it illegal.
Now state senator David Rouzer, the same knucklehead behind that legislative enterprise against scientific measurement, wants to simply do without (?devolve,? as he could not possibly have put it better, given the antiscience context) ? the Department of Energy. Not because, say, NC doesn?t have a thriving and growing wind energy industry (10,000-plus expected megawatts by 2030); not because we aren?t on the bleeding edge of the fracking controversy; not because we don?t have a biofuels industry; not because the NSF-funded NC State University-led FREEDM Center isn?t leading the way into the Smart Grid future.
No ? Rouzer wants to ?devolve? the Department of Energy because ? well, let him tell it: ?When I went over to the Department of Energy one day, you walk down the hall and most of them who are drawing 6-figure salaries are sitting there reading books.? Books! Do I need to remind you that starts with ?B? and that rhymes with ?P? and that stands for pool? ?You start reading books and it?s only a step from books to thinking, which leads to reason, which leads to logic, which leads to scientific theories about things like evolution or climate change. And this is North Carolina, where we don?t hold with such. I mean, how far from that is, say, hug dancing?
Okay, sorry. Carried away a bit.
Fortunately, we have other science stories here, with good news outcomes and a connectivity theme, though, sad to say, they also center on some good old North Carolina dumbassery. To begin: turns out while Jonathan Moss was on his honeymoon, some knucklehead burglarized his apartment. Moss?s landlord emailed him the news, and Moss got busy. He used his iPad to turn on the Prey software he?d downloaded onto his MacBook. The MacBook then began taking pictures of the guy who had the laptop and telling Moss exactly where it was. Moss went to the police in Aruba; they called police in Raleigh, who went to knucklehead?s house and got the laptop.
And that?s interesting because Moss was in Aruba at the time. Much scarier was this crime spree, which started with three knuckleheads stealing an iPhone. An iPhone, of course, is highly trackable, so while the police were tracking it they were able to document the whereabouts of said knuckleheads, which appears to connect them with several other robberies ? they took pizza! ? robbery attempts, and a shooting. Once the phone stopped moving around, police went to its location and found the knuckleheads. No word, regrettably, on the condition of the pizza.
So, anyhow. Our legislature remains committed to leading the world in science- and learning-related dumbassery, but our citizenry seems perfectly capable of using technology ? especially connectivity ? to improve the lives of all North Carolinians, save the knuckleheads. I draw no conclusions. But if you come to visit us in North Carolina, don?t let the legislators see you reading any books. And make sure you have your tracking devices turned on.

Hark the days of our childhood when many of us played flag football. Those were the good times. Sure we would find some time to play tackle football without pads and other times a simple game of ?two-hand touch.? But there was always something special about playing flag football. At any position on the field, we could be who we wanted to be. Maybe I could be Joe Montana at quarterback or even ?Mean? Joe Greene at defensive end? It was a game of simplicity and grace and it brought out a smile in each of us.
High School football might take center stage on a Thursday or Friday evening at Memorial Field and Pop Warner on a Saturday at Burbank High, but it doesn?t get any better than wrapping that flag belt around your waist, inserting your mouthpiece and wearing your jersey with pride.
Flag football is alive and well here in Burbank. It?s thriving and it?s here to stay. One visit to Foy Park on any weekday evening and the memories come rushing back. The noise of whistles in the air, enthusiastic yelling by the players, positive encouragement by the coaches and cheering amongst the fans are just a fraction of the sights and sounds at Foy Park.
?There is a lot of excitement this year,? said Jason Dyer, the City of Burbank?s Recreation Coordinator. ?For one, we have doubled the numbers. We went from 12 to 24 teams. We?ve also had some free camps and clinics and will continue to have them throughout the season.?
Burbank Park and Recreation has done a tremendous job in continuing the success, tradition and enjoyment of flag football. Dyer said there are 30 to 40 percent new kids participating this year.
Twenty-four teams are separated into three age brackets (Grades 2 ? 4, Grades 5/6, and Grades 7 ? 9) and two divisions per bracket (NFL and AFL). Each game features 8 on 8 with every player being eligible on offense. Each player plays the same amount of time. Most importantly for many parents, there isn?t any?hard hitting or tackling. The emphasis is on learning the fundamentals of the sport and the rules of the game.
?You get to learn the game without getting hit. You learn how to move your feet and learn how to play each position,? Dyer said. ?You want to be able to come out here and play and not worry about an injury that might eliminate your career this young. There is a need for both (tackle and flag football) and I think both can co-exist which is great.?
While teams come and go at the youth level, there is one constant in Burbank. The Burbank Dolphins and Coach Mike Graceffo are synonymous with flag football in this city. They have been a fixture of Burbank Park and Recreation for more than 30 years. Graceffo is a pillar of strength in the sports community.
?I love sports and I played all the sports when I was a kid. This is my way of giving back to the community a little bit,? said Graceffo, who has coached in this league since the late 1970?s. ?I love flag football because you can open it up. Everyone is eligible to catch a pass. It?s an offensive dream and a defensive nightmare. It?s just a fun game.?
Graceffo?s love and passion for flag football and youth sports does not go unnoticed. He has gained the admiration of many former players who keep in touch with him to this day as well as coach by his side as an assistant.
?Mike Graceffo is awesome. I?ve been able to play for him and coach with him,? said Kenny Knoop, defensive coordinator for the Burroughs Indians. ?I still work with him to this day with our schools and PE. He?s still right there in my life.
?I absolutely love the Burbank Dolphins,? Knoop continued. ?I still go to games and see Mike (Graceffo) and Ken (Bailey) on the field. I started football with the Burbank Dolphins. That was my introduction to football. They are definitely still in my heart.?
?Mike taught me how to be a competitor, how to love sports and to be a team player,? Burbank Dolphins Orange assistant Mike Mersola said. ?He is kind of like the fabric of the city and the Dolphins program is a fabric of the youth. My memories of it were the best times of my youth. Coaching now is really rewarding. It?s an honor and a privilege.?
The Burbank Dolphins Orange is currently 5-0 while the Burbank Dolphins Black is 3-1. It?s nice to win but victories are the last thing on the mind of Graceffo and his staff. It?s about teaching his players how to play the game of football properly while making it exciting at the same time.
So what makes flag football so much fun?
?It?s all about speed and not just hitting people like tackle,? said Nathan Mehta, 12, quarterback for the Burbank Dolphins Orange. ?I?ve learned that when you keep winning don?t get over your head because there is always someone working to beat you. Always keep working hard even if you are winning. Always be ready for the next game.?
?I like the sport,? said Jesse Rodriguez, 11, who plays guard, center and kicker for the Burbank Dolphins Orange. ?I like to run a lot. It lets all my energy out.?
?It?s fun to play with your friends and it?s a sport that I like and I?m good at it,? said Jonathan Topete, 12, running back for the Burbank Dolphins Orange.
Knoop played tackle football for the first time in ninth grade at Burroughs High. He credits his flag football experience as a major reason for successfully preparing him for the high school level.
?Flag football helps you with the concepts of moving in space and travelling and attacking a person. Two kids running into each other isn?t what football is all about,? Knoop explained. ?As a kid I learned how to attack a target, move lateral, cross the field to get where I was going and learn the angles of the game.
?The basic fundamentals of hand-eye coordination, catching, throwing and blocking were all there without smashing into somebody. I am a true believer that tackling in football is an attitude. You don?t have to have pads on to do that correctly. I am a big advocate of kids in flag football. They are learning all the basics of the game.?
Many kids who played flag football first before tackle during the middle school years later became successful at the high school level and beyond.
These Burbank Dolphins alumni include Kenny Knoop, Carlos Baker, Todd Dellutri, Ryan Bowne, Dylan Mersola, Joe Cesta, Mike Cesta, Matt Pentecost, Jabbar Craigwell, Brian Kaloustian, Kyle Creamarosa, Keith Jarbo, Richie Ramos, Bobby Machuca, David Machuca, John Jay, John Wagner, Mike Wagner, Ryan Buchanon, Finnbarr Geary, Freddy Keeler, David Escobar, Migual Armendariz, Joe Ungos, Shane Clark, Seth Oseransky, Dillon Disiere, Jake Micioni, Jon McGinley and Josef Topete to name a few. ?
Approximately 95 percent of these players went on to star in high school football without having played tackle until their freshman year. Thus, flag football is a great way to begin one?s journey on the gridiron.
The future of flag football is bright in Burbank. Dyer hopes for all middle and private schools in the Burbank area to participate next year for grades seven through nine.
Burbank Park and Recreation will be hosting a high school night at a Burroughs, Burbank and Bell-Jeff football game soon and there will be an end of the season finale that includes punt, pass and kick, and a ceremony honoring the champions, runner-ups and sportsmanship winners for this season.
