What tilt-shifting in a video game looks like

The method of photography known as tilt-shifting has become popular in recent years, especially the off-shoot known as "miniature faking." It's a process that makes a location seem like a miniature model. As it turns out, the trick works great in video games as well.
The following video, which first popped up on Reddit, has captured a number of scenes from "Battlefield 3" via the same method. As the authors, Independent Gamers Production, suggest in the annotations, it is best viewed in 720p HD:
What was originally a highly realistic looking game now appears even more so, and the footage above is at times indistinguishable from tilt-shifted footage from real life. The only real give away is the explosion in the very beginning, along with the uniform tides hitting the shores, also early on.
Those knowledgeable with picture taking are quick to note that it's not "true" tilt-shifting and is somewhat of a misnomer.
It would be interesting to see this same method used in other games that are not steeped in reality, like "Halo," or even "Super Mario Galaxy."

Mayweather ignores Pacquiao, lauds Cotto's skills
LOS ANGELES (AP) ? While Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Miguel Cotto sat on golden thrones behind him at the famed Chinese Theatre, promoter Richard Schaefer gleefully noted that the first film ever played at the Hollywood landmark in 1927 was "King of Kings," Cecil B. DeMille's silent Biblical epic.
Mayweather hardly needed another reason to think he is God's gift to boxing, yet the unbeaten five-division champion stayed mostly silent Thursday about his only real rival for that throne atop the sport.
Mayweather and Cotto promoted their May 5 bout at the 85-year-old film landmark just a short walk from the Wild Card Gym where Manny Pacquiao trains under Freddie Roach. Mayweather (42-0, 26 KOs) promised an action-packed fight in what's likely to be his toughest test in a half-decade.
Money May threw only shadow punches at Pacquiao, his sole rival for pound-for-pound supremacy.
"My job is not to worry about other fighters," Mayweather said from his throne. "My job is to fight the guy in front of me."
Mayweather ripped Pacquiao in previous weeks and previous promotional stops after he failed to reach a deal with the Filipino congressman for the fight everybody wants to see. Instead of debating revenue splits and Pacquiao's courage, Mayweather seemed determined to avoid saying Pacquiao's name in Hollywood, instead focusing on Cotto (37-2, 30 KOs), the Puerto Rican champion with feared punching power.
"I'm just thankful for where I'm at today in this sport," Mayweather said. "I've lasted a long time in this sport by being sharp, having tremendous defense. Whatever his great attributes are, I have to do what I do best."
Mayweather and Cotto will fight for Cotto's WBA 154-pound belt on Cinco de Mayo at the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas. Undercard fighters Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and Sugar Shane Mosley joined Mayweather and Cotto on the theatre stage.
Mayweather still managed to criticize Pacquiao in more oblique ways than he did two days ago in New York, when he decided Pacquiao is "not one of the sharpest knives in the drawer" after their phone conversation about fighting. Mayweather even managed to turn his praise of his next opponent into a criticism of Pacquiao's 12th-round stoppage of Cotto in November 2009 ? arguably Pacquiao's most impressive win to date.
"I look at Miguel Cotto as an undefeated fighter, because Miguel Cotto fought one fighter at a catch weight to where he wasn't full strength," Mayweather said, referring to the 145-pound weight limit for Cotto's loss to Pacquiao. "Same with Oscar De La Hoya (who also cut down to 145 pounds to fight Pacquiao). I don't want to fight a guy at a catch weight. I want to fight a guy at 154. He's solid, he can eat, he feels good, and he can go out there and perform at his best."
When he wasn't dismissing questions about Pacquiao by deliberately pretending the queries were about Cotto instead, Mayweather complimented his next opponent's skills ? some learned from observing Mayweather at a Las Vegas gym a decade ago, Mayweather believes.
"I think Miguel Cotto has been watching me for a very, very long time," Mayweather said. "Miguel Cotto had a chance to sit at the Top Rank (gym) when we both were fighters at Top Rank, and he used to sit right there and watch me train every day, watch me box. Even some of his movement, I see it comes from me. I'm thankful that fighters can pick up stuff from me and use it and be successful. He's a solid guy. He's a good fighter."
Cotto also complimented Mayweather in the latest chapter of what's been a civil promotion to date. Mayweather got the tallest throne and the biggest spotlight even though Cotto is the champion in this fight, but Cotto rarely shows any interest in the posturing that goes along with boxing.
"Of course, people want to see (Mayweather vs. Pacquiao), but Floyd's next step is Miguel Cotto," said Cotto, who has won three straight fights since losing to Pacquiao, including an emphatic revenge of his only other loss to Antonio Margarito. "If people want to see that fight (against Pacquiao), they have to wait."
Mayweather also declined several invitations to reprise his criticism of New York Knicks guard Jeremy Lin. Last month, Mayweather tweeted his displeasure with Lin's stardom in comments widely construed as racist.
"I'm not fighting Jeremy Lin," Mayweather said with a laugh. "I thought, in this country, you had freedom of speech. They failed to realize that I said he was a good player."
Mayweather could go on for days with his unique brand of humble-braggadocio, but the rest of the year will be busy for the champion, who turned 35 last Friday. After this fight, he's expected to spend June and July in a Nevada jail to resolve a domestic violence case, and he sounds interested in being in the ring more frequently in the next few years after fighting just five times in the last half-decade.
"It's amazing to be at 35 and still be at the top of the sport and get nine-figure deals," Mayweather said. "It's truly amazing. It's a puzzle. Leonard (Ellerbe, Mayweather's top adviser) is a piece of the puzzle. (Adviser) Al Haymon is a piece of the puzzle. I'm just the centerpiece."

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Senate on Thursday defeated a GOP effort to roll back President Barack Obama's policy on contraception insurance coverage in the first vote on an issue that raised questions of religious and women's rights and riled Americans in this volatile election year.
The 51-48 vote killed an amendment that would have allowed employers and insurers to opt out of portions of the president's health care law they found morally objectionable. That would have included the law's requirement that insurers cover the costs of birth control. Democrats said the measure would have allowed employers and insurers to opt out of virtually any medical treatment with the mere mention of a moral or religious objection.
"We have never had a conscience clause for insurance companies," said Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif. The measure would have given insurers more opportunities to deny coverage for certain treatments, she added. "A lot of them don't have any consciences. They'll take it," Boxer said.
Republicans argued that the law needs to be reversed because it violates the First Amendment's guarantee of religious freedom by forcing insurers and employers to pay for contraception even if their faith forbids its use. Democrats said the amendment, sponsored by Sen. Roy Blunt, R-Mo, was an assault on women's rights and could be used to cancel virtually any part of the law.
Both parties were using the issue to rally their bases; Republicans sought to hold together conservatives and others in the midst of an unsettled battle for the presidential nomination. And for Obama, there is no constituency more crucial to his re-election chances than women.
In the end, the vote hung on a handful of centrists as Democrats chose a parliamentary maneuver that required only 50 votes to kill the amendment. Only three Democrats and one Republican defied their parties.
Voting with Republicans in favor of the amendment were Sens. Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Bob Casey of Pennsylvania, both up for re-election, and Ben Nelson of Nebraska, who is retiring. Sen. Olympia Snowe, R-Maine, who only this week abandoned her re-election bid out of frustration with the polarized Congress, was the lone Republican to vote to defeat the amendment.
Democrats pounced on the symbolism of Snowe's decisions. "If Republicans keep this up, they're going to drive away independent voters, women and men, just as they are driving moderates out of their caucuses," said Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y.
But Republicans kept one such senator in the fold on the vote, Snowe's fellow senator from Maine. Sen. Susan Collins kept all sides on edge until minutes before the vote, saying on the Senate floor that she was troubled that the administration could not assure her that faith-based self-insured organizations would be protected from the mandate to cover contraception.
"I feel that I have to vote for Sen. Blunt's amendment," she said.
Both sides protested strenuously that an issue affecting millions of Americans was being used for political gain, but the debate was steeped in election-year strategy. The presidency and the congressional majorities are at stake, and Obama's contraception coverage policy is one of several cultural issues that have become prominent in the nation's political discourse this year.
On the presidential campaign trail, GOP frontrunner Mitt Romney apparently stumbled over a question of whether he supports the amendment, in the end saying that he does support it, "of course." His main challenger, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, has said that contraception conflicts with this Roman Catholic beliefs.
Blunt, Romney's liaison to Congress, predicted the issue won't go away.
It "won't be over until the administration figures out how to accommodate people's religious views at it relates to these mandates," he told reporters after the vote. "This is a debate that might be settled at that building across the street," referring to ethe Supreme Court.
The Obama administration and congressional Democrats said Blunt's measure was so broad it could allow employers to opt out of virtually any kind of medical treatment.
"This proposal isn't limited to contraception nor is it limited to any preventive service. Any employer could restrict access to any service they say they object to," said Secretary of Health and Human Resources Kathleen Sebelius. "The Obama administration believes that decisions about medical care should be made by a woman and her doctor, not a woman and her boss."
A majority of Americans support the use of contraceptives. The public is generally in favor of requiring birth control coverage for employees of religiously affiliated employers, according to a CBS News/New York Times poll Feb. 8-13. The survey found that 61 percent favor the mandate, while 31 percent oppose it. Even Catholics, whose church strongly opposed the recent government mandate, support the requirement at about the same rate as all Americans
